Violence in Deep South declines by 12%

PATTANI, 11 August 2016 (NNT)-The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 has revealed that levels of violence in Thailand’s South have decreased more than 10% this year.

ISOC Region 4 Deputy Spokesperson Colonel Yuthanam Petchmuang said the restive south has seen 12% and 31% declines in violence and deaths respectively since January compared to a similar period last year.

The fatality rate during the Holy Month of Ramadan also hit the lowest level in 13 years year on year. He insisted the security unit will continue to limit potential violence in the three southernmost provinces despite the improvement.

According to Col Yuthanam, 30 surveillance camera centers have also been set up to share images taken locally with the Royal Thai Army. Eleven more centers will be established in other areas.

He also claimed the gas tank exchange program, which was introduced last year, has so far proven effective in preventing fatal explosions. Nearly 80% of metal gas tanks, which are either for sale at local stores or used by local residents at homes, have already been replaced with the composite ones.

It's a bit like the British Government saying in the 70s that in 6 months period the violence by the IRA had decreased 12%.  Just takes one bomb to "blow away" that figure.  The important thing is "has the reasons for the violence changed ?"  I don't think so.

decreased more than 10% this year

NSC Secretary-General Gen Thawip Netniyom reported in March 2016 that violent incidents in the southern border provinces was down 60%. If true, then insurgent attacks increased 50% overall since then to date. That's not a credible accomplishment for the military.

All we need now is the Minister of Tourism to weigh in with her usual words of ... wisdom  !

There will now be a self video helmet that tourists will be required to wear throughout their stay. This will be connected to the central police office to better protect and monitor the tourists movements. Tourists will pay a 2000 baht deposit for helmets, of which 1000 baht will be fully refunded.

This will be used in conjunction with the monitoring ankle bracelet and the I spy sim , an additional 3000 baht will apply . If the tourist is blown up , we will know where they are.
