Cory Bernardi: Australian senator defects to launch right-wing party

Australian right-wing Senator Cory Bernardi has defected from the nation's government to launch his own Australian Conservatives party.

Mr Bernardi confirmed his move in Australia's upper house on Tuesday, ending months of speculation.

The outspoken senator has repeatedly criticised PM Malcolm Turnbull's government for being too moderate.

Mr Bernardi's views on topics including same-sex marriage, climate change and abortion have polarised public opinion.

Good riddance. He's a nasty, bigoted, extreme right wing, fundamental Christian type. Let him scramble against Pauline Hanson to see who can be the most racist. That's who he will be stealing votes from if he makes it to the next election.

You only have to look at a picture of his face to see how bitter he is.

He was already in a partially right wing party. Libs need more liberals; Labor needs more workers.

He went to the USA for three months to observe Trump's campaign (I trust it wasn't funded by the Oz tax payer!) Be interesting to see what policies he will come up with; not. Over the weekend just gone Hanson articulated more protectionist policies & some other garbage. Bernadi expresses admiration for Hanson and the likes of Lambi. cannibals the lot of them.

Yes, although one suspects that Australia's loony right prefers the home-spun clap-trap of Pauline Hanson to the deeply fanatical 'dry' ideology of Bernardi. Not room for both , fortunately.

Unfortunately he has some serious funding support from The Cash Cow.

He has already denied that claim. Just read his three month trip to the US, funded by the tax payer, was as a representative of the Oz government at the UN err... read study Trump campaign- what a farce!

Glad to see at least partially corrected your first post. Now if you were being totally unbiased you would have also mentioned that a Labor senator also went on the same trip.

OK, didn't know that. However, it does not lessen the farcical nature of Bernardi staying in NYC to attend the UN when he subscribed to anti UN POVs and spent time observing Trump's campaign. To summarise the guy was IMO unworthy to be a representative of Australia & underlined by such observations as  suggesting "same-sex marriage would pave the way to legalised bestiality" and other OTT commentary. God only knows why his party pandered to him by sending him to NYC for three months - I assume the usual political 'deal'.

Is the guy a defector, or a floor crosser?

Will he try for the top job in the future?

Sounds like Australia has interesting politics as well.

A floor crosser, but not a cross dresser. He'll have no truck with nancy-boy stuff.

Is the guy a defector, or a floor crosser? ... Not crossing the floor but going from centre-right to a bit further right, so he will still support the present govt 99% of the time.

That's who he will be stealing votes from if he makes it to the next election  ...No he won't, he is a S.A. senator so he will be competing against, and stealing votes from Xenophon and his mob at the next election. It would be political suicide for him to move to another state and try to build a new support base so he has to stay in SA.
