VOA questions

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.

I'm a Ukrainian citizen and I'm planning to visit Thailand most probably in January 2018. I will not be arriving from Ukraine though, most probably I'll have a flight from another Asian country nearby. I'm of course counting on VOA, because travelling to Thai embassy in Ukraine is too time-consuming due to the fact that it's located 650 km away from me.

So, my first question is for how many days can I get a VOA? According to this info from the Thai embassy website, I can get a 30 days visa if I arrive by plane:

"Those who arrive at the airport without a prior visa will continue to receive a 30-day stamp"

Its that still relevant? Or am I only eligible for 15 days VOA after all?

I think that 15 days is not enough to explore Thailand. Thus, if I can get a 30 days VOA, it's fine. But if only the 15-days option is available, some questions arise.

First of all, can I extend that visa? I'm stumbled upon some info that it can only be done due to health issues. Is that correct?

If the extension is not possible, can I leave Thailand and then come back in let's say in one month and get another VOA?

Or in that case, it would be easier for me to just go to Thailand embassy in Ukraine and get a 30 days tourist visa?

I'll be grateful for any kind of help.

Regards,

Vadym

You're quoting the Visa Exempt rules (which give 30 days). Ukraine citizens have to apply for Visa on Arrival, which is only 15 days; they're not entitled to visa exemption AFAIK

You will only get 15 days after applying for the visa on arrival and paying 1000 baht for it. The only extension of the 15 days you could get is 7 days to leave the country after paying 1900 baht.

It would be best if you got a tourist visa before traveling. A single entry tourist visa is free until August.

If not you could go to a nearby embassy to get a single entry tourist visa or leave and re-enter the country to get a new visa on arrival.

Thank you guys.

That actually makes it clear regarding the 30 days question.

In that case, are there any rules regarding the minimum duration of absence between two entries? Like can I leave the country after 15 days for just one day and then enter it again, pay the fee one more time and get another VOA right away?

You said you will probably fly from "a nearby Asian country".

Can you not get a tourist Visa there?

There is no minimum time out of the country to get another VOA. No problem to get another one.

I assume you are aware that a ticket out of the country within 15 days is a requirement to get a VOA.

Yes, that is probably going to be the option I'll go with. However, I'm still working on my itinerary, so I don't know which country I'll be flying to Thailand from. Thus, it's a little premature to decide, I'm just gathering info for now.

Yes, I am aware of that rule. However, does it pertain only airplane tickets or is it possible to use any other kind of transport (buses, trains, etc.)?

Immigration might accept train or bus tickets when you apply for the VOA but the airline you travel on might not accept them and not allow you to board the flight to here.

Well, that sounds strange to me. Will they check my tickets before allowing me to board the plane? Why does the airline even care when, where and how I travel? I though it's a prerogative of the immigration authorities.

And what do you mean by ' not allow you to board the flight to here'? They won't let me out of the plane when we land?

When you check in for flights the airlines check to see if you can enter the country you are traveling to since they can be fined and be required to pay for your return flight if you are denied entry to the country.

By boarding I mean at check in for your flight to here not after arrival.

Okay, that makes sense. Thank you so much for this crucial info.

-----------------------------------

Yes but the normal procedure at most Thai consulates is to take the application for the visa on the morning of the first day and return the approved visa on the second day.

so a two day hotel stay is almost always the minimum stay requited  to get a visa because of that fact

Note- I am talking about getting a tourist visa in nearby Asian countries.
