UN body reminded not to interfere

Featured Replies

The government has reminded the UN human rights representative to respect the kingdom’s sovereignty and not interfere in internal affairs after the two sides reached a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) two months ago.    Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Chum Sounry spoke to the media after a closed-door meeting between Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Wan-Hea Lee, the country representative for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) at the ministry yesterday.

“The meeting was the first between the minister and UN rights representative since the two sides reached the new MoU,” he said. The two-year agreement was signed in December, allowing the UN’s rights office to continue operations in the kingdom. But the new deal came with a reminder of Cambodia’s sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in its internal affairs.

“The minister called on the OHCHR to pay special attention to respect Cambodia’s sovereignty, avoiding any interference into the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Cambodia in accordance with article 2 (7) of the UN Charter, which refers to non-interference,” Mr. Sounry said. “Ms. Wan-Hea Lee told the minister that this year was the beginning of re-strengthening cooperation between the OHCHR and the Cambodian government and she pledged to do her best to build trust and confidence between the two sides.”
