Power plant protesters end protest

Opponents of the Krabi’s coal-fired power plant project have agreed to end their protest held in front of the Government House and to return to their home province after the government agreed to conduct a new environment and health impacts assessment (EHIA) study of the project.

The decision to end the protest was announced at the protest site in a joint press conference attended by First Army Region commander Lt-Gen Apirat Kongsompong, government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaeokamnerd and three core leaders of the protesters.

Police agreed to free five core protest leaders before noon today after their arrest on Saturday morning. 11 protesters were released earlier also in the same morning today.

Govt gives in to protesters’ demands to order new study of Krabi coal-fired plant

BANGKOK: -- THE GOVERNMENT has accepted demands from protesters and ordered that the Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) of the Krabi coal-fired power plant be restarted from the beginning.

The move has concerned officials at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat), who voiced fears that the delay would affect power stability in the South.

After a tense confrontation between protesters opposed to the plant and state officials, which escalated after Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha approved the controversial coal plant on Friday, the government backed down yesterday and agreed to protesters’ demands, ordering that the public participation process within the EHIA be restarted.

Authorities also released five prominent leaders of the protest who were arrested and detained at the 11th Military Circle in Bangkok on Saturday.

Prayut said work on the coal-fired power plant would not be allowed unless the project passed the EHIA.

Not sure exactly what this means on a macro scale re: protests, but this is the first time I can remember that the Junta has backed down.

On a micro-scale the EGAoT will probably not be able to competently complete the required studies, so suspect this plant will never be constructed.

maybe. Thinking of all the possible solar panels to create energy there must be a lot of money going from hand to hand to build the plant. Who cared for any environment in the past when it came to money? Greediness = Thainess. In this generation there will be no change. It's sad but true

If the protesters believe any review will overturn the go ahead for this project I think that they are going to be very disappointed.

as one of the thousands of protesters since the very beginning nearly 3 years ago, i can say that if anybody thinks that we will settle for an environmental review & assessment that is anything less than completely honest and transparent,

they are going to be very disappointed.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              WE IN KRABI WILL NEVER THIS ALLOW COAL PLANT TO BE BUILT!!! :post-4641-1156693976:

Don't get your hopes up.

Coal stocks listed on the SET have rallied this morning.

our anti-coal coalition has put forth plans, over a year ago, to the tripartate committee, of viable biomass and solar coming at both construction and delivery/usage cost equal or less than coal... we submitted substantial environmental data as well... there are undoubtedly some very big fingers in this pie, but we in Krabi WILL NOT back down!!!

As mentioned coal prices have been buoyant lately. 'Clean' coal technology is going to affect renewables until storage gets addresses critical mass needs.

Renewables are the future and will become less expensive and more efficent into the next decades but countries who have fewer carbon obligations and peak power needs will need coal or gas plants in the interim. That is until the technologies are refined elsewhere and shared.

THe review as mentioned here and as a possible win, reminds me of the Yes Minister episode,  and Hacker needing a report, a favorable report to dump a British chemical plant producing dioxcin. THe Henderson report was nicely tweaked for political ends. A rare win for Hacker over Humphry if i recall correctly.

As sure as night follows day, same will happen here.

You fought the hard fight and got a small victory well maybe not this government is a juggernaut when it comes to decision making. Its their way or the highway I am afraid.

While you are thinking about all those solar panels, spare some time for the 16 hours per day when they are producing SFA. Perhaps those making the decisions are thinking more about the need for electricity and less about inflated claims of environmental damage.

What is troubling is that no notable global warming celebrities have involved themselves in this discussion.  Where are Al Gore or Barack Obama ?  Only Green Peace has voiced an opinion.  Maybe the notables of global warming do not want to mess up their vacation plans, but then a spewing coal fired electric generation plant could do just that.

Spewing what, electricity? Do you think they'd prefer sitting around a fire singing Kumbaya while passing around the Greenpiss donation bucket.

Sincerely, I hope you win. Coal fired plants have no place in the world these days and just hope the General has the sense to back down even after previously giving the plant the go ahead.

As I remember, Thailand has few coal resources and even they are of a high bitumous type making the coal unsuitable for poerd station use. Thailand will have to import fuel for this project. Which general holds the monopoly on coal imports and stands to make a profit when the plant is up and running?
