Women flock to foreign work

Featured Replies

The number of Cambodian women being sent to work abroad last year increased by 30 percent compared with 2015, a report said. However the report also noted that more than half of all the migrant workers who were rescued and repatriated last year were women.

According to the Cambodian National Council for Women’s report, released yesterday and presented by Women Affair’s Minister Ing Kantha Phavy, there were a total of 38,196 Cambodians working as migrant workers abroad in Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea. Of whom, 13,993 of them, or 36.6 percent, were women. In 2015, only 9,723 Cambodian women were migrant workers, amounting to an increase of 4,270 or 30.5 percent.

The report also stated that 223 Cambodian migrant workers were repatriated last year, of whom 144, or 61.8 percent, were women. “According to the Cambodian embassies abroad, they took legal action to protect the migrant workers and Cambodian citizens’ rights and interest,” Ms. Kantha Phavy read from the report.
