UK PM May's Conservatives win parliamentary seat, first gain for ruling party for 35 years

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's ruling Conservatives won a parliamentary by-election in the north-west English region of Copeland on Friday, taking control of a once safe seat held by the opposition Labour Party and the first such gain by a ruling party since 1982.

 

The Conservatives, who had been bookmakers favourites ahead of the vote, won by a margin of more than 2,000 votes from Labour.

 

The vote, which was triggered by the resignation of the incumbent lawmaker, underscores the difficulties Labour faces in the north of England following last year's vote to leave the European Union, at which the party's pro-EU stance alienated many of its Eurosceptic working class voters.

I don't disagree with your analysis.

 

Corbyn is a socialist utopian, completely out of touch with life in the North of England. He will never see mass immigration as anything but positive despite centuries of evidence to contradict this. Labour are unelectable whilst he is leader.

I am constantly amazed by simpletons response to the opposition leader, following the BBCs campaign of anti corbynism and believing the nonsense pumped out by the Tory spin machine. The fact is that ministers on all sides of the house are frightened of being held to account by the new kind of politics that corbyn wants to bring in. Bringing social media and email from people in the streets to PM question time and the house of commons in general is something that fat cat loving Tories just don't have time for. Tory's prefer to spend their time hoodwink their sheep followers into believing that the NHS is dead and numbers of patients are increasing as a natural trend rather than community care funding cuts. Of course the Tories have been trying to sell off the NHS since 1973!

I think most of the country is frightened by the 'new kind of politics' Corbyn wants to bring in, all except the blue rinse nose ring brigade!

Well the Tories win in Copeland was predicted and for once they got that right.  I do think that the nuclear issue was a prominent factor.  Not sure that Jezza will survive long term as many will see this loss as a result of his views on nuclear matters.  Labour did hold Stoke (no brainer really) but with a smaller majority.

Agree, but it's not only Corbyn. Labour are now full of these liberal idiots who just don't represent what the Labour party was established for and it's core voter base believe in. They need a strong leader who's willing to have a big clear-out and send those Libtards back to the Green party and such like.

Labour was born out of socialist values but that was then and we live in a very different world now.  The left versus right lines were blurred with the rise of politicians like Blair who proclaimed "New Labour" which was far more central or in fact right leaning.  At that point the left were pushed aside with the token Prescott to get the unions on board.  That New Labour Party was then rejected and the swing went back to the original socialist blueprint.  Nice idea but not workable on any level at all.  Consequently the Labour Party are unelectable with Corbyn and his gang at the helm.

The real fact is that Corbyn is trying to rehash old policies that were soundly rejected 30 + years ago. Your claims of media brainwashing are also far from novel and , apart from being deeply insulting to the average voter , look a bit silly considering the Brexit result.
