BANGKOK: -- The government today brushes aside the attempt by followers of Phra Dhammachayo to petition the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) saying it is enforcing the law and it is the domestic affairs of the country.

 

The statement to affirm the government’s stance on the special power under Section 44 of the interim constitution to declare the temple under specially-controlled zone came amid report that an international Buddhism network in Thailand with close tie to the controversial temple planned to petition the Bangkok-based UNCHR today against putting the temple under a special zone for control.

 

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan said today that they have to understand that the government is doing everything under the law and is also trying to follow the democratic procedure although it is a sovereign state.

 

He said as the government wants to see the country move forward, it needs to use special law firm sake of national security and economy.

 

He said the government was not worried about such attempt to drag foreign intervention in its domestic affairs as the government did not threaten any particular individual.
