SRT purge stems from lack of transparency in procurement deals

 

 

The abrupt replacement of the State Railway of Thailand governor and board of directors by the prime minister exercising his special powers under Section 44 stemmed from complaints of lack of transparency in project and procurement biddings in the SRT.

 

Government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaeokamnerd told a press conference today (Friday) about the purge in the SRT management on Thursday, saying that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha had received a long list of complaints accusing the lack of transparency in the staging of bids for projects and procurement deals in the SRT.

 

He said the prime minister could not ignore the complaints and had to take the action to purge the SRT management while investigation was underway to determine whether the allegations were substantiated or not.

The SRT Makkasan area where the railway shops are located was / is a swamp. Perhaps Prayuth has begun draining swamps with a loaded .44 and the big wigs at the SRT are now temporarily unemployed. I don't agree with most of his moves but this one seems a good idea. Now to drain the other swamp. Wat swamp? You know.

So many swamps in Thailand, the country is just one BIG swamp.

It's a shame the the ousted governor was actually making decisions and starting things moving in, generally, the right direction. Sadly, it seems not fast enough.

 

We now have a reset, all projects potentially on hold until the new lot learn what a railway is

 

is it possible that these people will be replaced by another group that will not provide transparency ?  and at the same time not be subject to scrutiny due to their 'connections' ?  i'd like to think something is working right here but i have my doubts.

 

A lack of transparency in the procurement process of a state enterprise . Golly, it looks like Thailand had a lucky escape there, might have been some corruption involved. Still the new chaps will no doubt be from a suitable background.
I wonder during which term they study running a railway at the Military Academy?

People need to accept there is no transparency in anything the Thai government does. Right down to the lowest slimiest level where some gutter crawler civil servant can extort money from tourists for innocently feeding fish.

The British did it, but then, they were always at war, something which the Thais have yet to be tested on. You may well be familiar with this one.

Yes, the Royal Engineers Railway Operating Department (ROD). In fact I believe that there still is a specialist squadron of reservists, recruited from amongst railwaymen.
They don't train for the "commercial management" of railway systems though!

I hope it will not again delay the missing link on the purple line... but we will see.

Obviously, the right snouts need to be in the trough when the new massive rail contracts are finally tendered. This deal will fund the retirement for the current crop of generals, and it wouldn't do to have to share the bounty.

How about the transparency on army contracts, with nephews with no track record winning multi million dollar contracts? How is the transparency there?

Lack of transparency. I might be jumping to conclusions but I thought that was a prerequisite for running any state organisation, in or out of Thailand. And not a few governments,
