Has anybody on this forum contested one of these automated speeding fines?

I don't know what's going on but I have received four fines in the past two months and only one of them seems legitimate.

The latest one said that I was doing 132kmh on route 7 coming from SVB airport. I never drive my car this fast even when alone as it's a small Honda Jazz and doesn't feel comfortable past 110-120. I normally cruise at 100 on the 120 sections of motorway. In this case I had my folks in the car, one of whom is an advanced driver and was sat next to me and said there was no way that I was travelling this fast.

Anyway, I have paid the latest fine but would like to dig a bit further. I also doubt that the speedo is so much out of calibration, but I suppose I might get that checked too.

We seem to get a ticket every time we drive to BKK.
500 baht is hardly a deterrent.

Yes, every time I take the car out this past 2 months it seems we get a ticket!

Most speedos here are optimistic, so I also doubt that the jazz will do that speed,  i would send it back and seek more information

Yes, over 120 and it doesn't feel comfortable anyway for a smaller car. The fine is paid but wondering how many others are getting 'seen off'.

Contested them a few times and will always do so if I know I was not exceeding the speed limit.  Always pisses them off when you ask to see the photo evidence or copy of Gatso record printout.  They wobble, fluster and attempt to say it takes too long,  just persist and if they are still belligerent insist you go to their local station and make a formal request in writing. Then you get a nice Wai and "have a nice day" from them. Always has worked for me.

However as I said I always contest it when I know I was not speeding but when I have been speeding I just pay up because I consider it was a fair cop.

Are you talking about the fixed speed camera fines that are delivered in the post with a printed out photo sheet as in my OP? If so, where do you send them back to? Cheers.

No I'm not because never had one.  I am talking about the roadside goons with their toys.

Ok, I've managed to avoid those....

Did you not get an attachment asking how much you would be willing to pay? Only kidding. Its one of the reason I don't own a vehicle. I think their figures are not plus or minus so much but a lot on the plus side. They have these new Nokia toys and I feel they are getting a little to enthusiastic

If you're caught on camera, what is there

to contest....it would cost a fortune to hire

a lawyer, check out the equipment, and have it

verified  that it was inaccurate on the day you were

charged...observe the law.... problem solved

I believe to contest doesn't require it to go that far at all. No need to hire lawyers etc. I know that I wasn't travelling that fast and I've heard of other people getting busted that weren't breaking the speed limit.

As I said in my post, I paid the fee but would like to find out if there is any way to contact them and find out if many others are being stitched up.

Seems strange to have 4 tickets within a short space of two months after over 15 years of incident free driving in Thailand - obviously these speed cameras haven't been around that long.

I guess I have been just plain lucky.  I have seen the signs.  These kind of tickets are real money makers.  I would challenge the first one just to see what they have to prove I was speeding.  A couple of weeks ago the Police set up a road block looking for drinking drivers.  Cars were being fined 3,000 baht and cycles fined 2,000 baht.  Each driver stopped was given a breath test and was given a ticket to be paid at a table that was set up along side the road.  My wife said that there was a line and a few of the violators compared their tickets and they ALL had the same alcohol content in their blood.  The odds of this must be quite high.  The tickets were laughed off and they just paid their fine.

I'm not doubting your side of the story, but I suspect a lot of the guys blowing past me on the motorway at 150+ have been doing it for years without consequences, and they'll be getting a lot more than 4 of them now that there's some enforcement measures in place.

To be honest, I've been dreading the first time that happens to me here in LOS, since I haven't had a drink in 28 years.  I've paid out a few 200-300 baht shakedowns, but 3,000?  Ouch.

To my knowledge  the  "fixed " cameras in Thailand  are  set to trigger  at a  generous  120 kmph considering the  average limit  is  90kmph.

I have  been snapped only once   for  132kmph although i have  never  exceeded 120  according  to  my  speedometer. Have since  had  that checked  and confirmed  it was  reading 10% below actual speed. I now avoid exceeing  that  10%  margin.

When it comes  to  hand  held  devices the   whole  debate  changes. In my home country if there is  any genuine  debate then  a question about  or  visual check/confirmation of the latest calibration date of  the  hand  held  device often settles  the  question  if it  is  more than  1  month  previous. wink wink

I believe there are cameras on the Bangna-Trat section that trigger at 91kmh on those particular stretches.

I did wonder about the calibration/accuracy of my speedo too (10 year old Jazz).

I was caught "speeding" 14 years ago when driving behind a tractor waiting to turn off highway to Don Muang. Must have done about 30!!! The Police stopped me on the exit ramp to Don Muang.

The camera can get it wrong, I know from experience in the UK, but I think you would have a hard time convincing anyone.

In my case I was stopped by a mobile unit on the M5 in the UK. They flagged me down and said I was going to be charged with excessive speeding at 95 mph. I just said he was mistaken so he took me to the police vehicle and showed me on their monitor a picture of my vehicle with the speed of 95 mph superimposed on it. I just said to him the vehicle was incapable of that speed and he was welcome to take it for a drive and prove me wrong. He had a good look at the vehicle, an old Nissan Bluebird, and when he saw my wife and 1 year old son in the back he said ok, on your way. I told him that some distance before the camera another vehicle had passed me going hell for leather and suggested the camera had picked up on that vehicles speed but put mine in the frame. He just nodded and said possibly.

That saying "the camera never lies" is a myth.

My top of the range Nextbase Duo camera when played back on the computer gives a continuous GPS readout (so truly accurate) of the speed at any given moment in a graph and digital format alongside the picture. I can screenshot that so if that ever occurs I could contest it......if I could be bothered.
