Jailed trio quit the CNRP

Three senior members of the opposition, now in jail, have quit the party after the National Assembly backed amendments to laws governing political parties. Lawmakers Um Sam An and Meach Sovannara sent a letter of resignation to Pol Ham, chairman of the central committee of the CNRP. Senator Hong Sok Hour also quit.
 

All cited personal reasons. Senior CNRP lawmaker Eng Chhay Eang confirmed that the letters had been received.
 

“The resignation is to avoid complexity with the new Law on Political Parties,” Mr. Chhay Eang said. The amendment to the law was passed by members from the ruling CPP on Monday. Once brought into force, it could be used to remove political parties whose leaders had been convicted.
