Mahidol University distances itself from group of lecturers that called for stop of Article 44 use

By The Nation

Mahidol University Sunday announced that it has nothing to do with lecturers of the Institute for Human Rights and Peace Studies who called for the junta to stop using Article 44 of the interim charter.

The university issued a statement, saying the group had no rights to use the university’s name to issue such a statement.

On Saturday, the group issued a statement saying the National Council for Peace and Order chief had exercised the power too often to issue nine orders, including putting Dhammakaya Temple and surroundings area as controlled area, this month.

Mahidol University disavows midnight statement

BANGKOK: -- The Mahidol University issued a statement on its Facebook page on Sunday distancing itself from the statement of the university’s Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies calling for an end to the use of Section 44 by the NCPO.

In the statement, Mahidol University said that the issuance of a statement opposing Section 44 by a group of people claiming to represent the institute in a way damaging to the Mahidol University was not an expression of academic freedom.

The university firmly believes that every citizen must follow the law for the sake of peaceful co-existence in the society, said the statement, adding that a panel has been formed to investigate the statement.

Classic example of the administration  having a political base and the lecturers having an organic connection to their field of inquiry.

See how they run!

Statement: follow the law!! Law based on what...

Action: form a panel to investigate...lolarama

Article 44 was created by Prayuth exclusively for Prayuth,  it is his personal security, gives him ultimate power and makes him untouchable.

BANGKOK: -- MAHIDOL UNIVERSITY will form a committee to investigate a group of lecturers belonging to its Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP), following the institute’s statement questioning alleged junta abuses of power, including the issuance of Article 44 orders.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mahidol University denounced the lecturers for “damaging the university’s reputation” by using its name in their original statement. “Such action is not academic freedom,” the university statement read. “We urge the issuers to stop immediately.”

Mahidol’s statement added that it always stood by the principle that everyone must respect the law.

The university’s reaction came after the IHRP late on Saturday night issued a statement calling for the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to stop using absolute powers granted by Article 44 of the interim charter.

So opinions will not be tolerated in Thailand under the junta.

The junta has done a pretty good job scaring people.  Most Thais are pretty timid.  It is good to see some voice opinions.   The university will one day regret their decision.

True.  I thought universities were a place where the next generation were encouraged to enhance their critical thinking, form opinions and to question everything around them.  A university shouldn't be a place where young minds are suppressed by governments through fear.  How are young Thai minds going to truly develop and take their place in the world and not just Thailand If they are only allowed to accept what one man forces upon them with his article 44.  Propoganda isn't an education it's brainwashing and Prayuth has to realise that Thailand isn't the centre of the world and it's a big place outside it's borders.  The brain pool amongst the countries leaders isn't very deep at the moment, just look at Madam TAT, the deputy P.M, the P.M and assorted governors and police chiefs.  Suppressing young minds isn't going to move Thailand ahead in the future.  Just because university the question or have an opinion doesn't mean they are planning to overthrow the junta.

This Junta has definitely applied their vast past experiences in "managing" the country during their frequent reigns. Controlling the judiciary, press: check. Managing pesky universities/professors/students: check. Limiting discussions: check. Striking fear into the few who peep: check. Utilizing "laws" to stifle dissent: check. Discouraging politics: check. Hounding red-shirts and nasty religions into extinction: check.

You do have to applaud their efficiency, and "success".

Apparently the group of lecturers were able to see through the sinister nature of using 44 instead of regular law and procedures. 44 will protect the junta and the enforcement agencies from any charges should they storm the temple guns blazing. It is almost an amnesty before the culling. It is a sinister conspiracy by the junta. The monk should be brought to trial but you don't burn down the house to catch a rat.

The first victims were freedom of speech and press freedom, second came with the suppression of the NHRC, and now it is critical thinking, form opinions and questions as it makes one an enemy of the junta. Must be lonely at the top for the PM to be the only one with the right to criticism.

First they came for my sandwich...

But fortunately they have not sunk to the depths of Pol Pot yet but I suspect they wish they could

The junta has this "their everywhere their everywhere" mentality. Behind each tree lurks a potential enemy. They live in a world of political paranoia. Methinks there is pressure coming to bear from the people that pulls the junta's strings. Its an Edgar Bergen Charlie McCarthy setup at best.

Yes, heaven forbid a university would take a principled stand against abuse of power...

The University is saying that the group could not issue a statement in the Universities name. The group is the Human Rights and Peace Studies who probably feel duty bound to issue the statement considering their position. The majority of the Universities faculty are probably not ready to accept anarchy just yet.

Universities in Thailand (and increasingly around the world, it seems to me) are largely there these days to churn out brainwashed lackeys and servers of big business and the faux-elites who run things for their own benefits.

The last thing the unprincipled 'elites' want is students or lecturers who actually dare to THINK and QUESTION. Can't have that. It is DANGEROUS (to the less-than-one-percent who hold the majority in subjection and contempt)!

Wasn't that always the case, little point in sponsoring schooling which teaches revolution is there? When Mao put the students in charge there was mayhem.
