SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's top diplomat will visit the United States this week, the most senior Chinese official to do so since President Donald Trump took office on January 20, state news agency Xinhua said.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi would visit the United States on Monday and Tuesday, Xinhua said in a report published late on Sunday that quoted foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang.

Yang outranks China's foreign minister.

The visit follows a phone call between Yang and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson last week, during which the two affirmed the importance of a constructive U.S.-China relationship.

It was the latest step by the world's two largest economies to try to put relations back on an even keel after a rocky start following Trump's November election victory.

Trump angered Beijing in December by talking to the president of Taiwan and saying the United States did not have to stick to the "one China" policy, under which Washington acknowledges the Chinese position that there is only one China, of which Taiwan is part.

Trump later agreed in a phone call with Xi to honour the "one China" policy in a diplomatic boost for Beijing, which vehemently opposes criticism of its claim to self-ruled Taiwan.

Xinhua quoted a researcher at a government-backed Chinese think tank as saying a discussion of when and where Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping would meet first would be on the top of the agenda.

It said Yang's visit would coincide with the 45th anniversary of President Richard Nixon's ice-breaking visit to China in 1972, which paved the way for Beijing and Washington to establish diplomatic ties in 1979.

I'd like to congratulate China on the auspicious occasion of the birthday party for their reupholstered seat. I don't know many nations who would publicly celebrate the new stuffing of a chair, ...but to each its own, and kudos to China for consistently being weird without realizing it. Anyways, if I ever throw a birthday bash for one of my household items, I know who to call for ideas.

When Oz pm tried to talk serious trump hung up,
I think Yang wants to talk serious,
America needs to look at its colonial adventures since 1800's,
Claiming many islands from Philippines to Guam, thru Marshall Islands, to Hawaii, Grenada and Cuba, you know haiti, dominican and then look at diago  garcia, and
All thru Europe, middle east,  Afghanistan even ex ussr countries host American military bases and air strips
America  wants to back off,
Thousands of years mariners call the south China sea.
The south China sea,
Not west Philippine ocean, not east vietnam sea.
China is simply utilizing resources.
Get over it.
China is not expansionist unlike america.
Would you not utilize a safe harbour, air landing strip between touch points of your territory?
It's a big world, and getting smaller all the time.
China is not running pirate ships here.
The Islamic pirate ships were obliterated once the Russians and Chinese got involved.
I hope trump actually sits down and listens to what the China rep has to say.
China and Russia are our allies in this Islamic world war. Europe is nearly lost already.
Rant over and out :)
And have a really nice day, we are blessed

China is expanding, but doing it in a very smart way.
