Extending O-A retirement visa for another year

Featured Replies

A friend who is not internet-savvy needs his O-A retirement visa extended for another year. What are the requirements? I search for "O-A" in the ThaiVisa searchbox and I get "There were no results for your search." LOL  Lots of confusing info in Google as well. His visa actually expires in May but he won't be in Thailand then and wants to apply for an extension early.

Visas are not extended. He can extend the current one year permit to stay for one year he got from the OA visa during the last 30 days of it.

He would need 800k baht in a Thai bank for 60 days or proof of 65k baht income or a combination of the 2 totaling 800k baht.

If his visa is still valid he can leave and re-enter the country to get a new one year entry and then get a re-entry permit to keep that entry valid when he re-enters the country.

You're right, it's an extension of stay. That's useful to know about the renewal period is only the last 30 days.

Some offices will do it 45 days early.

Thanks. This would be at Chaengwattana so probably not so flexible there.

I checked with my friend and he wants to leave in three weeks. I've told him he'll have to come back in April if he want to extend his stay.

He only needs to be back a few days before his extension expires. Be sure he understands he needs a re-entry permit or he would loose his extension.

This sounds typical bureaucratic. LOL What does he need for that? Can he just fill in a form at the airport or best to get it done at Immigration too?

He will need a completed TM8 form. The fee is 1000 baht for a single re-entry permit.

He can do it at either airport in Bangkok on departure from the country or at immigration.

My friend now asks why he needs a re-entry permit this time when he often exits and re-enters Thailand on his retirement visa without applying for one?

Then he must have a multiple entry visa of some kind or he a got a multiple re-entry permit (3800 baht) when he applied for his extension.

If he has a OA visa he would be on a 1 year entry the got the last time he entered the country.

I really appreciate your patient answers. So if he hasn't needed a re-entry permit previously when he left Thailand, he shouldn't need done this time if he leaves in 3 weeks and comes back in April? (Problem is he can NOT come back in April and wants to extend now, and I've already told him you can't extend until the last 30/45 days.)

Either
1) his existing O-A visa is multiple entry. In this case, he needs to check the visa 'enter before date' (expiration date). He re-enter as many times as he wants while the multiple entry visa is still valid. Or

2) his visa is expired and he is on his current permission to stay stamp, which for o-a visa would be for 1 year from his last entry. If he wants to leave country AND preserve his existing permission to stay, he needs at least a single re-entry permit.

If you want to be 100% sure, you can upload clear photos or scans of the both the applicable thai visa page and the page with last thai entry stamp. Black/blur out any sensetive information.
