BANGKOK: -- Newcomers to media profession will be required to undergo training and pass the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) assessment before they are to be issued with licenses to become journalists under the amended Media Profession Standards and Ethics Promotion Bill.

General Kanit Suwannate, chair of the media reform steering committee, said Monday that media profession council would be responsible for working out details about the training course and KPI.

He said the steering committee had amended the definitions of media professionals and media operators to cover media technology. Freelance writers will not be covered by the definitions, he added.

The committee also decided to increase the number of members of the so-called National Media Profession Council from 13 to 15 and change the proportion of media representatives in the council from 5 to 7 with an interim provision allowing media professionals who have been performing their jobs prior to the enforcement of this law to carry on their jobs as if they had obtained licenses but they have to report to the council.

BANGKOK: -- PEOPLE ALREADY working in the media will be granted a licence to work in the sector without conditions, the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA)’s media reform panel said yesterday.

However, people or groups seeking to do media work in the future would face tough restrictions before obtaining a permit, the panel, which is drafting a new media bill, said.

Professionals seeking to enter the media industry after the enactment of the new regulatory law would have to undergo training, examination and receiving a Key Performance Index evaluation, committee chairman ACM Kanit Suwannet said yesterday.

Details on the regulations would be laid out by the Media Professional Council that will be set up once the bill goes through Parliament, he said.

The main KPI being the ability to bend over and smile.

The freedom of the press will hit a new low next year in the global ranking, unless others follow Thailand's bad example.  We can only hope otherwise.

Why all this hassle? I'm waiting for the day when all journalists will be kicked out of their job and replaced by military personal proven to be true to party principles. The colonialisation of Thailand by NK seems to be in full swing.

It will be a transitional thing slow and easy. As the old reporters disappear the new and improved models will take their place.

Beats me why the democratic world is giving this govt a free pass when other countries have been penalised much sooner.

2016 - the year that rights and liberties died

2017 - the year that the free news media died

2018 - what remains?
