Please evaluate my chances for employment

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone,

I will be very grateful to hear your opinions regarding my chances of getting a professional job in Thailand. I am looking for a legal long term employment preferably in BKK but any other location will work as well. Given my profile my questions are: is it worth trying? Are there any employment agencies to consider? Here are some highlights about me:

- Female, 28

- Ready to move and start immediately

- Fluent English and Russian, basic Thai

- Lived in Thailand for about 2 years

- Attended Thammasat University as a part of my master program, where I studied GAMs

- Bachelor Honors in Financial Management

- German Master Degree in International Business and Economics

-  8+ years of experience in account management, credit control and customer service in a busy international environment (I have always worked and studied at the same time)

- Interested in brand internationalization and development, influencer marketing, marketing research, data analysis, e-commerce

- Not interested in teaching, guiding, real estate sales

What do you guys think? Any tips on where to start?

I will greatly appreciate any feedback!

Met a young German woman at a car show some years back.  She got a job at Bosch by knocking on their door.  She worked at a factory down some ways from Bangkok.  Are you good at knocking on doors ?

Thailand is not the best place for job hunting, especially under military law.  It is not dynamic, but it does have a patient, diligent work force and some very good resources.

Language is helpful, but skills are too, so focus on attaining skills in something you love.   Also, do send your CV to jobs that might fit your abilities outside of Thailand.  Singapore is dynamic.  Indonesia is up and coming and Bhasa is much easier than Thai and is spoken in Malaysia as well.  Malaysia is far more developed than Thailand.

I have several friends with similar background that got "half-pat" jobs in BKK with large, multinational firms. Especially with your German backgound - there are lots of positions that require interface with the home office and certain business skills. The best way to find this is to network like crazy - chambers of commerce events, etc.

As far as your strategy is concerned, I think the best way is to just go to BKK first and be ready to spend one to six months on your search. In the mean time, you can teach English or whatever to pay the bills. These kind of positions do take time and usually won't come from a recruiter or advertisement.

Assuming you're German and now in Germany, why not check out what German businesses are located in Thailand and check with their headquarters about opportunities working in Thailand. Given your language skills and prior experience living in and studying in Thailand, you might seem an attractive choice over someone else for whom Thailand would be an uncertain posting.

Being that this is Asia. A full length bikini pic ( both front and rear view ) is required to fully evaluate your job prospects. Your formal qualifications are impressive and should stand you in good stead but if you are slim, pale and attractive your chance are greatly improved.

Think you have a reasonable chance. But it may take time to find something, so you may want to think about how you would fund yourself if you are going to spend that time looking for a job on the ground here. Although you've said you're not interested in certain areas, they might be useful temporary stop gaps to do this. I know quite a few people who came here, taught English as a stop gap, while developing their networks and waiting/ looking for opportunities in their chosen field. Care that some never find though.

Speaking of networks, would be useful to tap your Thammasat friends for help/ advice. Thais do it a lot and attach a lot of importance to their school and uni friends. I would often get Thai people working for me passing my CVs of their school/ uni friends. Sometimes in my field, and sometimes not, and they just wanted a senior person to help pass it to the attention of HR.

If you're looking for full expat status that would likely best be sourced from outside Thailand for you. Get employment in your home country and get them to send you here.

Your experience is a little limited and may be difficult to get full expat status. You're not really an expert with a specialised skill set - yet Accepting locally hired foreign national (LHFN) terms - sort of half-pat- or full local terms may prove easier.

Your areas of interest definitely have roles for foreigners out here. There are several design companies/marketing/media companies here in the SME category that use foreigners. Also possible in the big MN brand names, eg Coca Cola

Your areas of interest differ from your experience though. Recruitment agents as much as they deny it generally like to pigeon hole you, and find you roles in area  you have done before. Makes their life easy and easier for them to make that commission fee plus less risk. Few have imagination. Similarly many employers hire based on what you've done before. With that in mind, you might need to think about continuing in a similar area you've been doing. Get your feet under the table, then express your interests in other areas once you've built your own reputation.

Basically, based on your info, you're not going to be able to pick and choose, so may need to be flexible. But have a reasonable chance.

Good luck

Cheers

Fletch :)

yellowboat,

thank you very much for your opinion! I will consider your advice!

JHolmesJr,

booji,

thank you for your reply! Networking is not my strong side and of course I realize that that is my problem. I'm definetly not going back to BKK before I secure a job offer - been there. Thats basically what I was doing 2 years ago - I came to BKK and started to search for a job - I failed to get even a teaching position or position is sales. Thats why I moved on to do my masters. Just sharing)

little mary sunshine,

thank you!

Suradit69,

thank you! I totally realize that and work in this direction too.

johnnybangkok,

oh so helpful, thank you very much!

Pdaz,

here is hoping!

fletchsmile,

thank you very much for your time and detailed response! I am very realistic about myself and my skills and I totally agree with you. This is very discouraging how many rejections I get based on my experience not matching the positions I apply for. I find it to be very hard to pass HR people who of course do not have time to analyze my CV and intentions. My experience comes from my university years - I just had stable jobs to pay bills, but during my master studies I greatly concentrated on what I like - market research and branding, my master thesis was an applied research on youtube as advertising platform. I have always though that having a work experience related to the studies is a great plus but turns out it works againist me now.  Thank you very much again!

NMKDom,

thanks! Ill check them out!

JayBird,

yep I know( thats quite pathetic( Thanks!
