Hi. I had a Non-Imm B visa that was issued on Dec 15, 2015 in the US. I did a land crossing on the very last day of the visa's 90-day stamp power/ effectiveness, Dec 15, 2016. So the visa is now thoroughly expired and my 90 days are up on Mar 14, 2017, just two weeks away. Will it be possible for me to go to Immigration, pay 1,900 B, and get an extension of 30 days? I'll be starting the process for my new visa to be obtained here in Thailand either today or tomorrow, but am worried 2 weeks won't be enough time to secure the new visa. I imagine going to Lao and getting a tourist visa is a possibility to give me some breathing room, but if I can get the 30 day extension that should be sufficient. Any advice from someone in the know is appreciated.

FYI - I did go to Lao and to get a tourist visa for Thailand about 2 yrs ago when I was between trips to the US and between business visas, while living full-time in Thailand. But it's been about 2 years, since I've done that, and I haven't abused the system, so I'm fairly confident they'd issue me one.

No. There is no 30 day extension available.

All you can apply for is a 1 year extension of stay (not a visa), which I assume is the "new visa" you're applying for.

If you are still working, and have the appropriate documentation including work permit, you can get an extension on the basis of working. Otherwise, the only extension you might qualify for is  60 days to visit your Thai wife or child (should you have one).

The possibilities above aside, if you apply for an extension, you will be refused, but likely given seven days to leave the country.

If you do a border hop, or travel to a consulate in a neighboring country for a tourist visa, based on your description, you should be fine.

Though you've got the extra 90 days trick by bouncing borders before expiry, as the visa itself has expired, I was led to believe it is then not extendable - 30 days or 12 months. Someone might want to clarify...

You are extending the 90 day entry from the visa not the visa itself. You can extend any entry from the visa including the last one done just before the visa expires. Not sure where you got the false info that you cannot.

There is no 30 day extension for any non immigrant visa.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

Here's another thicky one: is that final 90-day entry (gained just before visa expires) still good if you were to then go overseas for, say, a month? So if visa were to expire tomorrow and I bounced borders today to get another 90 days, but then headed home for a few weeks in April. Guessing yes as original visa was a multi entry, but I still get this niggly feeling that as the visa has expired then any exit is the final one.

Once the visa has expired, it cannot be used for a fresh entry into Thailand. If you wanted to keep the final entry on the visa valid when leaving and re-entering Thailand, you would need a re-entry permit.
