Modest rise for Thai trade

Trade between Cambodia and Thailand was worth $5.6 billion last year, a $100 million rise compared with 2015, said the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. Thai exports to Cambodia last year were worth $4.7 billion while Cambodian exports to Thailand were valued at $936 million, embassy Minister Counselor of Commercial Affairs Jirawuth Suwanna-arj said.
 

The higher value of the Thai exports was because Thailand had more factories and companies than Cambodia and these were more established. But he said the slowdown in growth was because big Thai investors had invested in Cambodia and produced goods to supply the Cambodian market. 
 

Meanwhile, Cambodian exports to Thailand in 2016 increased by 46 percent compared with a year earlier, Mr. Jirawuth said.  Mr. Jirawuth said Thailand still saw Cambodia as one of the main markets for exporters, and Thai exports responded to Cambodians’ needs. Commerce Ministry spokeswoman Soeung Sophary said Cambodia had expanded its production, which had increased exports.
