Entry fees into national parks for foreign tourists remain unchanged

Recommended Posts

I don't have an objection, in principle, to foreigners paying higher entry fees than locals (have explained my reasoning in another thread here). However, this fee is insanely high ... even though I know the average visiting (or resident) foreigner here has more disposable income than the average Thai--making two-tiered pricing ok with me--400 baht is indefensible.

That said - here's something to chew on. In Singapore, locals have to pay $100 just to enter a casino while they are free for tourists. Reversed two-tier pricing with a purpose.

I was recently in Krabi they charge foreigners 400 baht and Thai people 40 Baht it is really too much difference. Unfortunately most foreigners including myself are not going to boycot this because of 400 Baht, but if they live there and like to do these kind of visit more often then they will avoid it.

It's not just the national parks. It's in a lot of the city/mall attractions as well.

One price for all or I don't go.

It's discrimination.

I'm not calling for price rises that Thai's can't afford.

Just one price regardless of nationality.

It's just the way it is here. So many other things are cheap and the same price for all. Not really discrimination if ALL non Thais pay the same price and all Thais  pay the same price.  My visa to China a couple years ago was about 4260 baht or something all Thais and Europeans were about 1100 baht I was only given a 7 day visa and my Thai friend 30 days. I was pissed and all I kept  thinking and sometimes saying was " that damn wall better be great" and it was!  I got over it.  Even in Istanbul at the most popular attractions they do it. My Turkish friend got me in at the Turkish price he just told me to stay  a few meters away from the ticket window because I looked enough Turkish. Other countries do it as well. The Thais do seem to post it right out in the open however. I think that is what gets you and others mad. But if you want to miss out on nice and fun stuff because of principle so be it.

Well guess what I choose not to go with fees so high

You can do many other things with that type of money A family of four has to pay 1'200 baht with 2 children

For that price you can go to the Zoo or other venue that is good

I am not missing anything And I chose not to be hosed by the rates

I would love to see the American Government start to charge Non Americans double at the National Parks

Outrageous

You and I both know that money is not going to improve the parks

The Bangkok Dusit zoo charges more for foreigners than Thais. I was there last week with my Thai friend. I think 100/50 or 80/40 I already forgot. I had a great day however and made my Thai friend buy me a few things at 7/11 lol.

Ko Samed national Park is exactly the same.
200 THB for foreign adults and 100 THB for foreign children.
For Thais it's 40 THB for adults and 20 THB for children.

It's ALL about the principle, Land of smiles they say, sure we understand why !!!
Outrages and completely wrong!

I'm over 20 years married with a Thai lady and have 2 children, they all can enter under the Thai rate but the moron asked me to pay the foreign fee, <deleted>!

Agree with your outrage.  However, if you showed your proof of residence in Thailand (visa or Thai driver's licence), and spoke to the gate attendant in your best Thai language you would have paid the same fee your wife and kids paid.  The foreign fee is intended to apply to foreign visitors of Thailand.

If that was really the government's intention, they'd make it absolutely clear to the ticket sellers and make a clear distinction on the price board, e.g. 'Thais & resident foreigners'.

They don't make that distinction so the higher fee is obviously not intended only for foreign visitors (on holiday, which is what I think you meant).

Anyway, by definition, all foreigners are visitors to Thailand.

I've no objection at all to paying a slightly enhanced fee (not 10x) if I'm a genuine foreign tourist in a country - for instance, if I went to ........ Chile - but I'm not that in Thailand, I live here with my family. By discriminating against me, the NP etc. authorities are also discriminating against my Thai family.

I always stick to principles.

Charging on the basis of nationality is discrimination.

It doesn't make me mad, and nothing I have posted has indicated anger on my part.

I don't see that, because other countries do it, that makes it ok here.

Discrimination on the basis of nationality (or other prejudicial criteria) is always wrong no matter where it takes place.

100 Baht is not a bad deal for the zoo I object to the ridiculously high prices because of the perception by the government that Farang are rich so lets price goudge them

I am not alone obviously because lots think the same way

Ok if you want to charge more fine than double the price but  what they want is ridiculous

It's not based on citizenship.  If you look Asian and have dark skin you get in for the local price.

Exactly, last year went with some friends two Japanese, two Thai, and me and Thai wife, to a small NP up in north of Chiang Mai, the Japanese held up fingers at the booth 40bht,, the thai couple did the same 40 bht, when my turn came 220 bht, based solely on race, this caused a big argument at the booth with everyone asking for their money back and refusing to go in, but the attendant was having none of it, and just kept pointing at the sign, i finished up arguing completely against my grain that i would pay the extra, as i did not want tro spoil the day for the others in our little group, needless to say the park was crap, and certainly not worth any charge at all, but when posters just say don't go if you don't want to pay, i would like to point out, it is not always that simple!

You had to learn that from somewhere because discrimination comes in many forms and you have been on the benefit side of it without sometimes even knowing it. Are you a white male?? Thailand and many other countries do it in many different ways.

My gender, nationality and ethnicity are irrelevant.

Discrimination based on these or any form of prejudicial criteria is wrong.

Yes they were 100% relevant in many points of your life. Are you a white male for example?  ( I could add other adjectives here as well pertaining to sexual identity, religious background etc.)

You have benefitted from this in your life and have hurt others with and without trying to. You can make PC statements all day long it doesn't make you better for it and others have suffered because of it.

It has nothing to with my nationality, gender or ethnicity.

Also my personal experiences in dealing with bigots are none of your concern.

Discrimination is wrong because it is wrong.

Stop trying to derail the topic by making it about individuals experiences of dealing with the hate that is prejudice.

In life sometimes you must pre judge. The Thais do it as well as everybody else.  You act holier than thou sometimes and you are not. Double pricing is legal and it's done in many places. It will never change. You are derailing the topic. You have to sometimes discriminate in life and often you don't even know you may be participating.

I never said it wasn't legal. I said it was wrong. Because it is.

You don't have to discriminate on the basis of nationality. That is a choice based in prejudice.

You don't have to participate in discriminatory practices such as the one this thread is about.

I know I don't.

You don't have to prejudge on the basis of nationality. That is discrimination.

I would like to see something positive made of these pink ID cards, which would allow lawful entry to these NPs by proving you are resident, but for some reason or other the authorities seem to keep it quiet (i wonder why) obviously the scope of issuing these cards would have to be widened to allow for resident expats who for whatever reason cannot get a yellow house book, at the moment it seems to me the use of these cards is purely at the whim of the attendants at the booths etc., or as i suppose this is asking for too much?

If you read it again, they all wanted their money back and were refusing too go in, as i said it went against my grain to persuade them to go in , and i would pay the extra farang rip off!

Selective pricing like this is illegal in Australia, political correctness no doubt.

Do Prayut and his cronies not go to Australia, Europe, or America?  They would then see we basically all pay the same in those countries. I really hope foreigners see sense and start boycotting these places,  they should go by their principals, and not because they can afford it.

I didnt actually say tourist, but by 'foreigner' i meant expats living here paying taxes, and spend their money helping to keep the locals in business, (when a farang wife goes shopping, its mostly, not always, but mostly the farang is paying).  But You know what i mean, you are just being pedantic. We who live here dont really care what the tourists do, if they want to pay 10 times the thai rate, yes, 10 times the rate, up to them.. Doesnt '10 times' piss you off just a little? No? Oh well, never mind, no promplem...?

No because I pay the normal rate but when I did I happily paid. . "We who live here don't really care what tourists do. LOL. Sums up a lot as the rest of the post does. Quite simple if you don't like the price don't go but trying to get all to  boycott is a non starter. Do you really belive they (by they I mean of course the Thai government and those who run the parks) give a dam if long term expats don't go.
