A former high-ranking air force officer was today (Friday) sentenced to five years and six months and fined 25,000 baht by the military court.

Mr Chidpong Thonggum, formerly an Air Vice Marshal, was today escorted from the prison to Bangkok military court by a team of police officers headed by Pol Gen Sivara Rangsipromnakul, the national deputy police chief.

He'd get less for piloting a plane drunk, crashing and killing 50 people.

And "just" five years. Others get 20 years for just one of these  offences.

Taken to court, charged, tried, convicted and sentenced on the same day?
Someone wanted him out of the way very quickly.

Normally, all the condemned make an appeal.
Is he now free on bail?

Clicked on this story expecting to read prison sentence,

then later ,suspend for 2 years, which seems normal,

a person of influence going to jail, thats news.

And not a mention of rank demotion, so I guess he'll continue to be a vice marshal

and resume his post in couple of years time as if nothing happened, like the

Ex-air force officer

Who did this guy pi$$ off?

The sudden surge in Political prisoners is interesting. Maybe things are going on behind the scenes.

interesting the article does not go into detail about the specific charges.

To be fair Chidpong's sentencing and fine is excessive when compared to army Three Star General Manas who was charged as a "kingpin" in Rohingyan human trafficking.

Manus was arrested in June 2015 while he was an Advisor to Prayut. To date there has been no prosecution. I suspect the military will allow him to be sequestered until his retirement with full benefits.

Seems rank does have its privileges in Thailand.

Does anyone notice that anyone who is arrested or convicted here is always an ex officer of the army or the police? Is a current officer, or a current minister, or a current CEO ever arrested or convicted? No. Why? Protect those in power at all costs.

Positive that police, high ranking officers and more people in that scale actually get sentenced now. That didn´t happen 5-6 years ago.
Still talking about the slow change that nobody else seems to see or want to admit. Just say something negative again, to get the pain out of your chests, lads!

Just remember nothing in Thailand, is what it seems!
