Phuket warned it is heading toward environmental crisis

A wellknown marine scientist and environmentalist has warned that Phuket is heading toward environmental crisis due to the continuing pouring of untreated water into the sea.

Mr Thorn Thamrongnaswasdi, vice dean of the fishery faculty of Kasetsart University said over the weekend that Phuket is producing as much as 180,000 cubic metres of waste water each day whereas the existing four waste water plants have a combined capacity to treat just 55,000 cubic metres of waste water.

As such, he said the untreated polluted water is untreated waste water – up to 125,000 cubic metres – is directly dumped into the sea. And this does not take into account the waste water discharged into the sea from tens of thousands of coin-operated washing machines operational along the coast of Phuket, he added.

Simple solution. As this is Phuket, simply arrest another few hundred tourists for feeding fish and use the money to pay for the new water treatment.

Assuming someone doesn't run off with the money, of course.

Luca next time please step on a small stool then we all can see your beautifull face.

another "dress up and pretend" photo op in the land of dress up and pretend.

I've been screaming about this issue for years...tilting at windmills. It's all just going to get much worse. Remember, the Thais never do anything till they have to or it's too late

Koh Samui is a good example.

Assuming Phuket's coastline is about 300 km, then that is the equivalent of a 20 m3 sewage truck dumping its entire load ever 50 m around the island every morning at 8 am and twice on Sundays.

It should be mandatory to shower after a swim anywhere in Phuket......or Fuk-it.

Edited by ExpatOilWorker

all of the water in Thailands is polluted, every drop of ocean water, every stream and every river

every drop of water around Samui is polluted with raw sewage, i lived there and would never ever swim off any beach

Word of advice. NOT only Phuket.

I only swim in the pool, people just pee in it.

all of thailand is becoming a big garbage dump

How much skin diseases getting registered in Phuket?

This is Thailand......so as per....nothing will be done......

And why do you think the squid and shrimps and praws grow so big here???

YES they live in and eat sh one T. Keep eating sh one T folks, then wonder why you die?

There is a reason that beach pollution levels are a state secret.

You could well be right but funnily enough just yesterday I looked up EEL Pie as a lot of eels in the local market . It would seem that a 100 years ago eels were a popular dish in London as they were the only swimming creature that could survive the polluted Thames. I doubt if everyone who lived on jellied eels did from eating them. Of course the Thames got cleaned up and it might happen one day to the sea and rivers here.

It's good. How can you find the time? It must be so much work!

In the light of a certain cinematic success recently, you could subtitle your blog, "Kama..La-La Land"!
