HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuban President Raul Castro harshly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration, trade and other policies on Sunday as Trump reviews a fragile detente with Communist-run Cuba begun by his predecessor Barack Obama.

In his first critical remarks directed at Trump since he took office, Castro termed his trade policies "egotistical" and his plan to build a wall along the Mexican border "irrational."

Castro's speech to a summit of leftist leaders in Venezuela was broadcast by state-run television on Sunday evening.

Before taking office, Trump threatened to torpedo the detente between the former Cold War foes unless a "better deal" could be struck, without providing details.

The White House said last month it was in the middle of "a full review of all U.S. policies towards Cuba."

Castro said: "The new agenda of the U.S. government threatens to unleash an extreme and egotistical trade policy that will impact the competitiveness of our foreign trade; violate environmental agreements ... hunt down and deport migrants."

He said migration was due to growing inequality and poverty caused by an unjust international economic system and that a wall along the Mexican border was therefore "irrational" and aimed at all Latin Americans, not just Mexicans.

"You can’t contain poverty, catastrophes and migrants with walls, but with cooperation, understanding and peace," Castro said.

Seeking to reverse more than 50 years of U.S. efforts using isolation to force Cuba to change, Obama agreed with Castro in December 2014 to work to normalise relations.

The two close neighbours have since restored diplomatic ties and signed cooperation agreements.

Trump said last month after having dinner with Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a vociferous foe of detente, that he and Rubio had similar views concerning Cuba.

Obama, a Democrat, used executive orders to circumvent the longstanding U.S. trade embargo on Cuba and ease some restrictions on travel and business. The embargo can only be lifted by the U.S. Congress, which is controlled by Republicans.

Travel to the Caribbean island from the United States has increased, with the start of direct flights and cruises and roaming agreements signed, but no manufacturing or significant trade deals have yet been agreed.

WH Staff will be asked to sum up their report into a single sentence and read it to Trump. Otherwise, it might not hold his attention.

I'm continually amazed at just how many people are so willing to hand over everything they ever had or ever would have had just because Obama and the bleeding heart dems blew kisses at you.

It's about time we stood up and said enough! Oh wait, we did when we sent the crooked Clintons packing and voted in someone with Americans in mind 1st and always.

Remember, other countries in the Americas are allowed to put their country's interests first but not the US. We're supposed to just sit and take it. C'mon, you know better.

Gosh, when you actually look into the story instead of believing pretty much anything coming out of NYC, you find it was Ivanka that brokered the deal and Donald that canceled it later on when he found out that the "Partners" were a lobbying group established during the Clinton/Obama years to promote Muslim interests with the US government.

The trumpist international agenda, if there is any coherence to it which is of course debatable, appears to be in the direction of unilateral trade agreements with any nation if there is a good enough "deal" from the U.S. POV. As opposed to recent administrations which at least gave lip service to caring about human rights and progress towards democracy in such relationships. So I don't understand trump's problem with continuing progress on the Cuba relationship. He wants better relations with Russia and doesn't care that Putin is a murderous dictator, in fact he admires that style. So why not Cuba?

Miami went to hell in a handbasket like a bad April Fool's joke in 1980. That's why we had "Little Marco" tossing his hat in the ring for POTUS and now, soundly beaten, making trouble back in DC.

I don't see the topic relevance of your comment except to parrot trump's crass insult tactics against Senator Rubio. That disgusting campaign is over. I'm sure it was big fun for trump supporters, but now he's actually supposed to do something.

Hand over everything? What are you even talking about?
