The National Election Committee (NEC) announced yesterday that 12 political parties have registered candidates for the upcoming commune elections in June. An NEC statement said that during a three-day registration period from Friday to Sunday, the ruling CPP and opposition CNRP, the country’s two main political parties, registered candidates in all 1,646 communes.

“The Commune Election Committee inspected the registration forms of the candidates of political parties who are standing for election,” it said.   The royalist Funcinpec party registered in 804 communes, League for Democracy Party in 787, Khmer National United Party in 622 and Beehive Social Democratic Party in 223.

The Cambodian Nationality Party registered in 53 communes, Khmer Power Party in 29, Grassroots Democracy Party in 27, Cambodian Youth Party (CYP) in 19, Cambodian Indigenous Democracy Party in 18 and Republic Democratic Party in 16. Commune council elections take place on June 4 and all registered political parties have two weeks – from May 20 until June 2 – to campaign.
