PM denies driving country to drink

Prime Minister Hun Sen has defended the country’s drinking culture at a ceremony to mark the expansion of Cambodia Brewery Ltd. Mr. Hun Sen said critics have accused him of being responsible for increasing alcohol consumption. But he argued alcohol is part of society in many developed nations and was popular here long before he became prime minister.
 

“People have mocked me and said Cambodia has become a drinking society. But I say drinking is part of society in Germany, Italy and France, all of which export alcohol as well,” he said. “Alcohol has been around for thousands of years.”
 

Mr. Hun Sen made the comments as Cambodia Brewery yesterday unveiled the results of a $100 million investment, which will allow it to produce up to 100,000 cases of beer per day. He welcomed the brewery’s expansion, but urged the public to be responsible about alcohol consumption, reminding people not to drink and drive.
