Skype or Whattsapp via a TV

Featured Replies

Hi All,

If I download Skype or Whattsapp onto a Kodi box plumbed into my TV would calls be possible simply by plugging in a webcam and mic combined via a USB port? Would the sound come via the speakers or would a separate speaker be necessary? I'm trying to make contact between Grandparents & Grandchildren easier than mucking about with a phone each week.

MY TV is a flatscreen Samsung.

     Thanks for any replies :)

Don't know about a dedicated Kodi box, does it run on the Android system?

But a mate and I both bought an Android TV box that had a built in web cam. We installed Skype and Line and Video calls work fine on both, with the sound also coming from the TV speakers. My Android box also came with the Kodi app pre-installed.

I don't use Kodi but my mate does and he says it works fine, no real issues although he does complain of occasional program freezing on the sorts app he uses via Kodi.

I can highly recommend one of these.

This will not be your cheapest option but they work really well.  Well worth the money. I have placed it in my relatives house who are not good with IT and they have no problems using it.

You might be able to get a secondhand one.

Well you wont be able to use whatsapp as you need to have a sim card in the phone, but skype should be ok for sure.
