WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump paid $38 million (31 million pounds) in taxes on more than $150 million in income in 2005, the White House said on Tuesday, responding to an MSNBC report that the network had obtained two pages of the returns.

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said she received the documents from journalist David Cay Johnston, who said on her show that he received them in the mail.

The returns, which MSNBC posted on its website, showed Trump paid an effective federal tax rate of 25 percent in 2005 after writing off $100 million in losses.

The White House said in a statement that Trump took into account "large scale depreciation for construction."

Trump has repeatedly refused to release his tax returns, drawing criticism throughout his campaign last year and speculation from his political rivals he was hiding something.

A New York Times report in October said Trump, a New York real estate developer, declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns. The newspaper said the large tax deduction could have allowed him to avoid paying federal income taxes for up to 18 years.

But the returns posted by MSNBC on Tuesday showed that he did pay taxes in 2005. The returns do not indicate whether he paid taxes in other years or how much he might have paid. The Washington Post reported last year that Trump paid no federal income taxes for at least two years in the late 1970s.

The White House said in a statement on Tuesday that Trump, as head of the Trump Organization, had a responsibility "to pay no more tax than legally required."

Presidents and major candidates for the White House have routinely released their income tax returns.

Trump says he has not released his tax returns because they are under audit by the Internal Revenue Service. Experts say an IRS audit does not bar someone from releasing the documents.

During a September presidential debate, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton criticized Trump, a Republican, for paying no federal income taxes.

"That makes me smart," he responded.

Trump has feuded with the media since his inauguration, often accusing it of promoting "fake news" intended to undermine his presidency.

"The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans," the White House said on Tuesday.

Remember the hysteria about him refusing to release his returns because "he wasn't paying taxes"?

Seems he paid a lot.

The person ( presumably an IRS employee or ex employee ) that leaked the return can be fined $5,000 and imprisoned for 5 years for doing so. What they did was a crime and hopefully they will have their day in court.

As I shall not be commenting further on this Trump thread, do not take my silence to indicate agreement with whatever follows.

The journalist who received the returns, Davis Cay Johnston, believes it highly possible that Trump himself leaked the documents. The skimpy information provides no insights as to the source of the income, which would be far more interesting.

It's pretty clear that they did not come from anyone in the IRS, as there bore a "Client Copy" stamp....

Too funny.  So someone leaked what Trump should have released on his own...as all other Presidential candidates have.  I would call that a public service.  Hope they have many more Trump tax returns.  Just love to see the orange orangutan squirm.

It's nice for Trump / whitehouse to confirm that they indeed are allowed to release Trump's tax returns. Quite difference compared what Trump was saying during and after his campaign.

Maybe Trump will now release all the wanted documents to the public?

It is another distraction. The Trump administration has, as the journalist clearly thinks released these fake news documents as a way to take the heat off the obama wire tapping thing. It is utterly pathetic what is happening in the USA right now.

I think you are correct....it is absolutely consistent with Trump's reactions to negative events in the past....

When will the government start to arrest and prosecute the individuals who are obviously government employees that leak this information...it's appalling.

Look if someone were going to leak Trumps Tax returns there would be all 50 000 pages from the last 15 years. Someone does not risk jail time to leak two pages of a tax return. This is Trump and his administration taking the heat off the wire tapping clam (possibly impeachable event) and the Russian investigation. Trump is doing whatever he can to confuse the media and the people. Now that may be 'fun' and games for a reality TV star but it is NOT what is wanted or required by the President and the people that surround him. Use your head.

This proves nothing, those returns are old and only for one year...its gives no indication of his current circumstances.

Absolutely, and in addition, it is only a selected part of his 1995 return which appears to paint Trump in a favourable light.

This is the White House trying to change the narrative and spin the fact that Trump is hiding something, namely his business dealings.

Trump et al requires newspapers to adapt to the new era.

Suggestion - solution: The newspaper front pages should be divided to two columns:

Left: .................................|  Right:

Real Issues .....................|  Current scandals / deflections / stupid stuff

- Trumpcare ....................|  - Tax leaks

- Russian connections ...| - Melanie a Soviet spy

- Trump IQ/EQ .................| - Microwave oven cameras

This way the real issues won't be forgotten, no matter what kind of smoke screen team Trump tries to push to deflect the real issues.

Exactly. Plus, the returns only relate to 2005, some twelve years ago.

Is it being a little cynical to presume that the other twelve years of returns up to this time may contain some revealing anomalies?

It is interesting to note that "The Donald" has been very quiet on the Twitter front lately. Have his merry band of minders convinced him to moderate his raves? I wonder how long it will last.

I absolutely agree!

And since the likeliest scenario is that Donald Trump, or someone acting on his instructions, was the perpetrator of this horrific leak, I will take special delight in watching the prosecution unfold....

The tax Trump paid in 2005 is the tax Trump wants to abolish

President Donald Trump wants to abolish the alternative minimum tax, which according to a copy of his federal tax return cost him $31 million in 2005.

That $31 million accounted for most of the $38.5 million in taxes he paid on his $153 million in total income for that year.

Buckle up for a long read:

Here’s Every Time Donald Trump Has Said He Would Release His Tax Returns

http://www.nationalmemo.com/showusyourtaxes-heres-every-time-donald-trump-has-said-he-would-release-his-tax-returns/

"His defense rests on the argument that the public could identify discrepancies that the IRS audit by itself may not find,

thus potentially making him pay more taxes. Still, the late President Nixon released his tax returns while under an audit,

and Trump himself released his tax returns to state officials in Pennsylvania and New Jersey while under audit in order to obtain a casino license."

Previous Presidents and candidates have released tax details , Trump has not because he has something to hide.

How do these facts reflect ' hysteria ' , why do you wish to prosecute a small time crook yet defend a huge one ?

What an absolute anticlimax from rabid  left wing ideologue Rachel Madcow Maddow. "Breaking news" build up over 20 minutes of baited breath rant on the story of the century only to find at the end, 2 pages of 10 year old tax returns which showed Trump paid 25% tax,  a higher rate  than Obama or Bernie Sanders. Trump should sack his accountant.

Now the conspiracy theorists are out and because of the disappointing non news say it was a Trump plant. Well if he scammed her then she fell for it because you would think in her enthusiasm to bring down Trump with her silver bullet, she would have actually read the transcripts beforehand! So much for impartial and independent journalism, think it's died.

Rachel blew it on this one.  But many of her videos are spot on.  Worth watching.  She's a very smart lady with many honors and awards.  Excellent journalist.

Many think Trump did release this, as it does show he paid taxes.  Makes him look good.

"Yes," Pulitzer Prize-winner David Cay Johnston replied when CNN anchor Poppy Harlow asked him if he thought the two pages, which show Trump paid $38 million in taxes on more than $150 million in income that year, could have been sent by the President himself.

"Donald has a long history of leaking things about himself and doing it indirectly and directly," Johnston told Harlow and Chris Cuomo. "So it's a possibility." He published the returns on his website DCReport.org
