It doesn't make their situation more legitimate, especially when they are trying to maintain, the guy is a crook, just because he used the tax code legally to his advantage.

For one year.

Is it not reasonable to ask what his tax returns were for every year?

Is it not reasonable to ask that this man, the President of the United States, with so much justifiable concern focused on his wealth and how he got it, show, what he has paid in tax to his nation?

Not unreasonable to ask, just take into consideration, it is not a legal requirement, and far as I know, it has only been done since the early 70's. So if the answer is no, I don't really have a problem. If we are going to deal with IRS documents, I would be more interested in the items the IRS refused to turn over, when Lerner departed office, and Koskinen took over.

Just to clarify for those that don't know, the loss carryovers are perfectly legal, and any business can do it, his was just a larger number.

No doubt his tax affairs are perfectly legal , which begs the question of why the evasion ?

I would suggest that Trump knows full well that tens of millions of ordinary tax payers would find the net figures morally repugnant , especially as he likes to boast about his wealth.

Remember the hysteria about him refusing to release his returns because "he wasn't paying taxes"?

Seems he paid a lot.

The person ( presumably an IRS employee or ex employee ) that leaked the return can be fined $5,000 and imprisoned for 5 years for doing so. What they did was a crime and hopefully they will have their day in court.

As I shall not be commenting further on this Trump thread, do not take my silence to indicate agreement with whatever follows.

No he did not pay a lot. He paid less than someone in his income level should. People earning in excess of  $1 million pay an effective federal  tax rate of 27.4% Trump had an effective tax rate of 24%.  He did his utmost to minimize his taxes by declaring $105 million in business income losses.

This tax return was for the 2005 fiscal year. What matters is 2015 and 2016. tax returns from 2005 have little relevance.

No crime was committed if the tax return was sent over by Trump himself.

In any case, it's good that you will not comment further, as you will only embarass yourself in your defense of a dishonest manipulative pathological liar.

Rachel Maddow, MSNBC, and David Cay Johnston(why 3 names?) have shown Trump to be a very successful businessman who pays HUGE taxes.

Well done!

now perhaps they can follow up on the NYT from page story of January 20( complete coincidence it was inaguration day) of the US government wiretapping the Trump campaign

Nobody knows how much Trump has paid in taxes as he hasn't released his returns.  Anything now is just an uneducated guess.  So no, not Well Done! LOL

There are many news reports about the wiretapping charges from Trump.  All say there were absolutely none.  Even those in his administration admit they've found nothing.  Zero.  Nada.  He's wasting time and trying to deflect from his other problems.  He's insane.  And wasting our money.

Trump paid more than Bernie or Obama.  Why don't they pay their fair share?

You are seriously writing this?  I am sure Obama or Sanders would love to have to pay 38 million in income tax.  Are you planning on giving them enough income so that they have to pay 38 million in income tax on it?

Except for farmers and fishers, income averaging no longer exists.  And certainly if it ever was a problem, a tweak to the tax system could solve it rather than propose something massively unrealistic like abolition of tax loopholes.

I may disagree marginally on some of the specifics, but Bernie's got the right idea.

Apart from the fact the westernjournalism.com is a notorious fake news source, any halfway thoughtful reader would notice that there were no actual links to the new york times article or in fact to any article cited in this piece.

And you might also note that the only reason Trump paid the amount of taxes he did that year was because of the alternative minimum tax. The one that means billionaires don't get to use unlimited loopholes to pay no tax. If the AMT didn't exist, Trump would have paid about 1/7 of the amount he did.  And you might further note that Trump's tax plan proposes that the Alternative Minimum Tax be abolished. Go Trump!

Here's what most likely happened: Trump and his minions know the public is clamoring to see his taxes.  So he (and assistant) go through all his filings since 1990's and find the one form which shows he paid some tax.  Then Trump arranges for only the first two pages to get leaked. It was leaked to the man who wrote a bio of Trump.

You'll notice Trump spokespeople made tepid attempts to appear affronted by the tax release.  It lasted about 2.5 minutes.  Purely an act. In contrast, every time there's a leak which hurts Trump (average of one per day) he and his people go red-faced ballistic.  Nothing of the sort happened in response to the 'planted' tax form release.
