Deputy PM Sok An dies at 66

Deputy Prime Minister Sok An passed away earlier this evening in China after a long illness, Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan confirmed late yesterday. He was 66.

 

Sok An – who was granted the prestigious title Samdech Vibol Panha just days before his death – was also minister to the Council of Ministers and a member of the permanent committee of the Cambodian People’s Party.

 

Siphan said Sok An died at 6:32pm Cambodia time in Beijing Hospital. The news comes amid a flurry of rumours that the deputy premier had passed away earlier in the week.

Sok An passes away in Beijing

Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, one of the most senior officials in the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and who recently received a royal title from King Norodom Sihamoni, died in Beijing early last night. According to a government announcement, Sok An, 66, passed away at 6:32pm last night in a hospital in Beijing.
 

“The government regrets and would like to inform civil servants, armed forces and the public that Samdech Vibol Panha Sok An, a member of parliament, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, has passed away...on March 15, 2017, at 18:31,” read the statement. Samdech Vibol Panha is the royal title bestowed by the king on Mr. Sok An. Mr. Sok An received the title from the king on March 13 and died two days later.
 

Minister of Economics and Finance Aun Porn Moniroth will release about three billion riel as ordered by Prime Minister Hun Sen to pay for the funeral.  Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is also president of the CPP, and other senior party officials have been in Beijing for four or five days to be at Mr. Sok An’s side.
