More fishy business on Thai - Cambodian border

Another change in import duty by Thai authorities at a joint border bridge linking Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province with Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province has both Cambodian vendors and authorities in turmoil over the inexplicable and confusing new rate. Based on one vendor’s account, Thai authorities this week started demanding those bringing carts of produce, often fish, across the Cambodian-Thai Friendship Bridge would have to pay 12 baht (about $0.35) per kilogram.

This was conflicting to a National Police report stating that each cart would be charged 800 baht (about $23), in response to vendors protesting last month to a sudden quadrupling of duties. Ath Bony of the National Police could not confirm the exact figure of the new duty being imposed by Thai authorities, but confirmed that the fee being charged now was contrary to the agreement made between customs officials from both sides.

“Yes, the story about fish vendors is old, but there is an update as the Thai authority did not comply with the fees that they agreed with Cambodia after the protest,” he said. He was responding to dismissive comments made by Poipet town governor Chounh Mengchrounh, who claimed that the National Police report was outdated, insisting that the issue had been resolved after the vendors’ protest.
