In Cambodia, NEC says 12 parties contesting in elections

The National Election Committee yesterday announced the names of the 12 political parties that will be contesting the June commune elections. The NEC also released the names of the two organizations which applied to become observers of the electoral process.
 

“After checking, representatives from all political parties have signed the document,” the statement said. The 12 political parties include the Cambodian People’s Party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party, the Funcinpec party, the League for Democracy Party, the Khmer National United Party, the Beehive Democratic Party, the Cambodian Nationality Party, the Khmer Power Party, the Grassroots Democracy Party, the Cambodian Youth Party, the Cambodia Indigenous People Democracy Party and the Democratic Republic Party.  
 

The NEC also said that starting on Wednesday, two national associations and NGOs will be allowed to place 521 observers to participate in the monitoring of the electoral process – the Committee for Free and Fair Elections in Cambodia (Comfrel), which has registered 293 observers, and the Union of Youth Federation of Cambodia with 228 observers. National observer registration will remain open until May 24, while international observer registration will remain open until May 31.
