Russian Army’s Commander in Chief Colonel General Oleg Salyukov wrapped up his three-day visit to Thailand on Friday, a visit which aimed to strengthen military relations between the two countries.

Salyukov arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday and met several high ranking Thai Defense officials and the army.

Russian Ambassador to Thailand Kirill Barsky told news website Russia Beyond the Headlines (RBTH) that both countries are determined to take results-oriented steps for strengthening military interaction.

“Thai military forces will participate in the International Army Games (in Russia) for the first time, while Russian Naval command representatives will be welcomed at the military parade dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN,” Barsky said.

In May 2016 when Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha made a trip to Russia, the two countries signed an intergovernmental deal on military cooperation.

The same day Russian Minister of Industry Denis Manturov announced that Moscow would supply two Sukhoi Superjet (SSJ-100) aircraft for the Thai Air Force.

Thailand has been interested in Russian aircraft since the mid-2000s. In October 2008 Bangkok bought several Russian Mi-17V5 helicopters and since then there have been discussions on ordering more.

In February 2017 Rostec state corporation's international cooperation head Viktor Kladov said that Russia plans to deliver four military transport Mi-17V5 helicopters to Thailand

“There are additional plans on conducting joint military exercises and sending Thai officers to study in Russian military institutions,” Barsky told RBTH, adding that these were “confidence-building measures.”

They had a few skirmishes along the Mekong river in the 70s and fared very badly then, also lost to the better forces during the show of force against the Cambodian army during the pagoda rights claim. On 25 January 25 1942 Thailand declared war with Britain and The US but everyone knew that they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag.

Military Ties??...you mean Thailand will be Russia's puppet bitch in SE Asia

No.Thailand will look at buying some old tanks and or submarines from Russia with a lot of money kickbacks going both ways. All useless equipment for an inapt military force. But looks great during military parades.

They are buying so much military hardware from so many different sources in time it might be difficult to figure out which spare part fits on which war machine. Look around you folks the war drums are beating all over while people are dying of starvation. I guess being killed in "war" like Syria would end up being more merciful.

I don't think that matching spare parts would be a problem.

They don't really bother buying spare parts. Not a "wise investment" you see...

What did they do when the Japanese invaded and occupied? Didn't they fight?

Briefly...at Prachuab Kiri kan. Were doing so so until ordered by the government to cease hostilities. Japan then supported Thailands claim to bits of Cambodia and Laos , which they had to give back later.

Actually, if you look at history, the country of Thailand has never fought a war. Previously Siam was a kind of warlord country.  The first King of Thailand/Siam was a General who warred against some states in what is now called Laos. He forced many Lao people to settle in what is now called Issan after defeating what you may call a Laos army. Most people from Issan can still speak Lao and Thai. Thailand as a country was created in the 20th century. Now that the US has abandoned and constantly slags Thailand, the Kingdom finds new friends. Bye bye US stupidity. Hello some new world order, China and Russia, bye bye some of US 260 odd US bases around the world. And to clockman, learn some facts before you post inane and constant Thai bashing comments. This civilisation is much older and far more wiser than yours

O My struggling with this, which English country did you study in, what is a Clockman? What is Inane?, I felt you tried to tell me your country is much wiser than mine. We did all this and more 100 years ago, so you should have learned by our mistakes. Bye Bye USA Ok, I can live with that sort of as like you I have my reservations, Laos a small country with identity problems but I can live there as not corrupt, so much, but close, Did you say that here with over 19 coups is much wiser than mine, look at a Bull, then look at his rear end as he delivers um the stuff this country lives on. Civilisation (real English spelling) ain't arrived here yet or ever will with this lot in power. Love this country hate the stupid people who control it, get a life, but may have missed a hidden comment, have a good day.

"The Japanese invasion of Thailand occurred on 8 December 1941. It was fought between Thailand and the Empire of Japan. Despite fierce fighting in southern Thailand, the resistance lasted only a matter of hours before ending in a ceasefire.[1] Wiki."

Missed that one, sorry.

Fact checking is OK. Aging should give us a little leeway licence. My precise meter is always set on low I take life with a grain of salt. Google is my friend but we do not go steady. I do not belong to the precise "how high is up" crowd. I like to love and laugh and not take life to seriously any more. I understand that there are JAG's in the world and that is OK to. I have many highfalutin friends as well. Me I like being me and would not trade places with anyone.

They did not declare war on either of these countries. After Japan made a deal not to interfere too much in Thailands' affairs, they decided not to get slaughtered as the Brits did in Malaya and Singapore and the Dutch did in Indonesia. Of course Japan reneged on the deal and many Thai civilian slaves died on the infamous railway. Thankfully the US with some small help from Australia managed to belt the Japs up. Despite my current occasional rants against modern US imperialism, the world owes a huge debt to the US for defeating Japan and the Germans at the cost of many US lives. After the war, many Thais who had supported Japan mysteriously disappeared or died in odd circumstances. The Poms and the French stuffed up in events after the war which lead to many conflicts. The US, after supporting Ho Chi Minh during WW11, reneged on a deal to get the French out of Asia. But Asia did boot imperialism out of Asia and now Asia is making their own decisions despite constant interference by some countries that still behave like warlords.

Apart from  defending the "winning " of WW2 as actually being an Allied Forces effort I  agree with the  basis  of the  rest.
