Cambodia: Trade in breast milk outlawed

The government yesterday announced a total ban on the collection and export of human breast milk, after it emerged poor women had been earning cash through the trade. Last week, the general department of customs temporarily banned an American company’s operation when reports highlighted how mothers in the disadvantaged Phnom Penh suburb of Stung Meanchey were being paid for their milk.  
 

According to an official letter from the Council of Ministers signed yesterday by secretary of state Ngor Hongly and sent to Health Minister Mam Bun Heng, the government has decided to halt all breast milk collection and exports.   The letter came after the Health Ministry asked Prime Minister Hun Sen for guidance on the issue on Friday.
 

Mr. Hongly said the government would take immediate action to stop the trade. “Cambodia does not sell breast milk from mothers, no matter how poor the country is,” he said in the letter.
