Cambodia: Beaten by mob, Reckless driver in critical condition

Featured Replies

The driver who ploughed through seven motorcyclists, killing three, in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmorn district on Monday evening is now in critical condition with a brain injury. Professor Chhoeung Yav Yen, an advisor at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, confirmed yesterday that the driver was being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit after being attacked by an angry mob.

“He is still unconscious. Our doctors gave him a brain scan and it showed that he has a hemorrhage because he was so severely injured,” he said. A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, identified the driver as Meas Sokheng, 30, who owned a phone shop in Mean Chey district’s Chak Angre Krom commune.

“Police in Chamkarmorn district sent him to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital immediately for medical treatment when he was attacked by the mob after his car ploughed into several motorbikes,” he said. “The victims of the accident are also still in hospital receiving treatment,” he added.
