Video: Overloaded pick up - Thais ask how did the police miss that one!

BANGKOK: -- A video of a seriously overloaded pick-up heading for Bangkok caused an online furor on Thursday.

People asked how on earth the police could let that one through their checkpoints!

The pick-up in question was loaded so high with rattan tables and chairs that it almost hit signs over the road.

And the massive load teetered precariously over the back of the vehicle as well - with the flimsiest red cloth to "warn" motorists coming up behind.

Thai Rath were advised by the land department and the police that it was indeed illegal to have such a load. They would be examining the footage to see if they could take retrospective action.

The poster of the clip - Naret Suanplai - told the media that he took the video after filming on the Mitraphap Highway heading into Bangkok on Wednesday.

The footage was viewed 150,000 times by yesterday after it was posted on the popular Facebook fanpage Youlike (clipdet).

The real problem is the Isan family sitting round the table eating Som tum,  in the middle of that load.

Oversize for sure,

not over loaded, = weight

only trying to save money your honor by doing one trip.

The stupidity of the law here says he must cover the entire load which he more or less has done.......out of  sight out of  mind.

Ive watched Police drive round a  4  foot by 2  foot  metal cage  in the  middle  of the road which obviosuly  fell off something and yet they failed to stop to remove it and all the potential accidents it  may have caused............did the driver of the filming  vehicle have both hands on the wheel?

this is their way of saving time n cost but do not realise that if an accident does occur, then more time n money would actually be wasted.

It was difficult to spot from behind a 100 baht note at every checkpoint.....? :coffee1:

They missed it because it happens so often that it is as inconspicuous as a motorcycle.

Could have been worse, some of these pick ups have the springs of a ten ton truck,

so regularly  grossly overloaded, upgrade to the suspension, the brakes ,maybe not.

regards worgeordie

Just pushing the daily limits, no safety concerns, as they know the chances of getting caught are slim to none.....

I've seen trucks like that repacking their load because they would touch the traffic signs. You won't believe how many idiots think they can drive this way into BKK.

Also i have seen them loosing their load on the mainroad in BKK.

Give them a huge fine or just take the whole truck from them...selfish people they are.

he had a red flag on the back as a warning. thats the bit i found most surprising.

Fake video -- if this was real, there'd be at least two workers perched on top.

Was the guy filming it much better holding a camera and filming while driving?

True. One step up form a flapping plastic bag!

It's not clear to me from the photo there is anything illegal about it. If the cargo doesn't extend past the front bumper, past the sides, and is less than 5 meters total height then no problems there. Cargo can extend past the back with no length limit as long as a red flag is attached for loads extending over 1 meter which it has.

You want the Police to stop them, put farangs in the drivers seat and watch how fast they put a stop to it

Overloaded and overweight.

Have you tried holding a pool cue at the tip-end straight out?  Same weight both ends but the force is greater at the fulcrum point.

How the hell did they get thru the tool booths LOL

To me every toll booth that they would have gone through along with the cops that are at them should be find.

But then again they won't

It is no bigger than a truck or coach.  As for the police, to much for them to think about!

Reckon you have pretty well summed up the vast majority of Thai motorists with that statement! They live in their own very small world with no thought or care for anyone but themselves!

Furor = three hypocritical comments on a facebook page?

Those fully loaded pickup have been tourist attractions for ages.

Seems to most posters here are really way out of their realm of reality here.

Canopy post 17 is the only one post that sees the reality. The truck is not overloaded. It is all done with in the rules and regulations. No weigh just bulk and stored legally as cargo.

Just goes to show how people respond when they are ignorant about a situation and make rash ill informed posts to bash Thai's

Several years ago before the military take over, the PM proposed a law that companies or individual  that owned the  trucks with over loaded loads were the ones to be fined heavily and the truck taken off the road. The idea of fining the owners was a good start but it took the bribe money going to the police and gave it to the Transportation Department. The police themselfs actually opposed this law in a demonstration at the Transportation department.so no law went into effect. Thus allowing the BIB to continue collecting their bribes. Why you see cops letting them go in that the bribe has been paid before hand.

As did italian truckers in the 70'/80' whit their " millepattes" " millipede trucks " with 4 axles on the first engine and also 4 axles on the lorry ..

110 , sometimes 120 tons and climbing the mountain between Bologna to Firenze at 2 or 3 km/h ...The wheel on the right side and driving on the right lane, they can open their door and read their newspaper(s) without problem...

But downhill on the other side at the same speed, 2 or 3 km/h; never or rarely used their brakes,

I have never seen an italian " millepattes" in the ditch and never heard about " brakes failed "

A little anthology , " florilege " in french  ..It's so common on thai roads...

All photos shot when cycling ...

The word accident does not come into their hit or miss thinking. Its the one time that they truly think outside of the box.

Good photos everyone, Thai ingenuity at its best. No pussy farang could ever come up with something like this.
