Angry mob threatens to lynch ‘witch doctor’

An angry mob threatened to kill an elderly man accused of practicing black magic at a village in Kampong Speu province on Saturday. The incident in Kong Pisey district took place at about 3pm, as villagers and monks conducted a ceremony intended to protect them from the 65-year-old man.
 

District police chief Colonel Khem Sophanra told Khmer Times that residents of Trapaeng Svay village congregated outside Prak Kong’s house and shouted death threats at him after he interfered with the ceremony. Col. Sophanra said monks had been setting up a sacred boundary to protect them from Mr. Kong, marked with a piece of string.
 

“Mr. Kong came out and cut the string used to mark the boundary as the monks were chanting at the ceremony,” he said. “Several dozen villagers became angry and gathered at his doorway, claiming he had been practicing black magic in the village.”

So what particular kind of magic are the rest of the villagers practicing that is intended to protect them from the other kind? Presumably, were he a practitioner of the black arts, the gentleman would simply have cast a spell on the lot of them and retired to bed.
