Govt eyes cultivating active learning in teachers and students

BANGKOK, 3 April 2017 (NNT) – The government has held a seminar to uplift the Thai educational standard by motivating both teachers and students to adopt an active learning mindset.

While presiding over the seminar under an educational promotion project called “Growing with Faith and Motivation”, Minister of Education Teerakiat Jaroensettasin was joined by school administrators, teachers and community members in a discussion to search for more effective educational management methods and school certification guidelines.

Based on a survey of Thai students, the minister said many could not answer what they wanted to study or would like to do for a living, signaling their lack of inspiration and educational goals.

He expressed confidence that the project will be a crucial instrument in enhancing the quality of Thai education as it seeks to encourage teachers and students to keep learning in an active and sustainable manner while sharpening the vision of school executives.

Being that they live in the graveyard of ambition, inspiration is hard to come by.

I started as a teacher here 25 years ago, having trained and licensed in the states.  I volunteered way back in the mid 90s to share ideas about cooperative learning, student centered learning, etc.  There was a push that far back for this change, and it is still something they are struggling with.  However, with very limited resources and rooms packed with 45 kids, it just ain't gonna happen.

So, how are they eying it? cautiously, from a safe distance where it can't jump out and bite them? or, incredulously, with jaws dropped open at the astonishing sight of something alien?
