BANGKOK: -- THE NEW constitution will be promulgated on Thursday – Chakri Day – in a ceremony to be presided over by His Majesty the King, according to a Royal Household Bureau schedule announced in the Royal Gazette yesterday.

HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn will preside over the ceremony at the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall starting at 3pm, according to an announcement issued by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha in line with a royal command.

The ceremony will include members of the Royal Family, privy councillors, Cabinet members, foreign diplomats, National Legislative Assembly (NLA) and Constitution Drafting Commission members, the Supreme Court president, heads of independent organisations, and senior military commanders and civil servants.

At the ceremony, the new charter will be presented to the King for his signature, after which it will be handed to the prime minister.

A court secretary then will read out a royal statement announcing the promulgation of the 2017 constitution.

That is to be followed by three rounds of 21-gun salutes by the Army, Navy and Air Force.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn will sign a new constitution on Thursday, the palace said, an essential step towards holding a general election the military government has promised to restore democratic rule after a 2014 coup.

Thais approved the long-awaited constitution at a referendum last August, but the palace requested changes in January after the king took over from his late father.

One of the changes was to allow the king to travel abroad without appointing a regent. Other changes, made by the junta and the military-appointed assembly at the request of the palace, have not yet been made public.

The palace said the constitution would be signed at a ceremony on Thursday, an annual public holiday marking the establishment of the current Chakri dynasty 235 years ago.

Publication in the Royal Gazette is expected the same day and it will then become law. It will be the 20th constitution since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as King Rama X of the Chakri dynasty, ascended the throne in December following the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for more than 70 years.
