Govt To Buy 10 Chinese Tanks For 2 Billion Baht

 

 

BANGKOK — The military government announced Tuesday it will buy 10 more battle tanks from China at a price of 2 billion baht, on top of 28 tanks already ordered.

 

The purchase was approved Tuesday during the Cabinet’s weekly meeting. Defense minister Prawit Wongsuwan said they will replace the aging American squadron of M41 tanks that’s set to retire in the next several years.

Of course. The charter is being signed and there will be an election at some point, These guys need to top up the retirement fund before the party ends. Expect a few more big ticket purchases like this in the next year.

I can see that when a civilian Government is finally elected they are going to take power, only to find the coffers are empty.

At that point, running and servicing submarines and tanks won't be possible, so it will all go to rust.

Unbelievable waste of money. These people are stupid, stupid, stupid!

Maybe an invasion is imminent? I have no idea who they would invade, but why else would you need to spend so much money on tanks? Maybe they're expecting to be invaded, but who would want to invade them? Maybe China's helping USA, they could pick up tanks on route to Korea, who knows why they would buy so many? My guess, just to roll them out on the streets now and then as a reminder of who is in charge.

To be used on whom? The only ones who want to "invade" Thailand are those who want work permits, a right to buy land, not be bothered and to be charged the the same as native Thais. They don't need tanks to keep them away. Their ridiculous laws and policies seem to be enough of a deterrent. Surrounding countries have too many of their own problems and not enough military might to be bothered with invading Thailand.

 

That leaves only one other target, and it's not external.

10 Chinese tanks at that price seem over priced to me.

Especially when one modern  anti-tank missile  can destroy a tank with one hit.

As the U.S. Abrams tanks with their depleted uranium armor piercing shells  proved  in Iraq against the Russian tanks the Iraqis had.

Not to mention the U.S. A-10 tank buster aircraft that decimated the Iraqi Republican Guard tanks.

The extra is probably for the mountain of spare parts they are likely to need.

Everything I have ever bought from China has broken down in no time at all.

Battle tank ain't gonna win no war when it breaks down five times a day.

Are the tanks instead of the Submarines, I remember they bought tanks from

China before and they developed cracks, these new or used, suppose they will

never learn.

Well as Thai's are renowned for maintaining sweet <deleted>, they don't really need any spare parts, only recovery vehicles !!

Yeah maybe they decided to give up the idea of searching for marine life. What were those hand held gizmos they bought thousands of, that didn't work at all?

They're just for show, to we know who is in charge.

They even can't buy 100 buses from China, nobody knows where they are now.

Will they be "assembled" in Malaysia (last minute fitting of the hub caps like the blue buses) to get the FTA special price benefit.

That is not the reason the Junta buy them, or the Navy buy submarines.......

This is the new Health Care Policy spending money.

Its a proven fact Chinese Tanks are best used for running over students: Tiananmen Square Massacre.

10 MBTS = 2 passes by a pair of good ground attack aircraft, unless of course you've also got the good level of air defence cover to stop the aircraft getting near, and the terrain and tactical knouse to deploy off road and hide them.

What's that? Oh, they're to be deployed at Asoke junction and The Victory Monument?

M41s would be easier to tow into position...

They are not that stupid. "Commissions" on these purchases is usually 40% and up. They prefer if the equipment ends up in the rust heap - then a new procurement cycle can begin...

Should like, read the article and stuff before jumping to conclusions.

Which would still leave a shortfall of about 600,000,000 baht if they got the same price, so they're likely still skimming off the top, but only about half the amount which you originally alluded to.

 

I wonder if Thai people will be up in arms about this
