BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday it was a scandal that the United Nations Security Council did not pass a resolution condemning a suspected chemical attack in Syria this week which killed at least 70 people.

"It was a barbaric attack that must be cleared up. The use of chemical weapons is a war crime," Merkel told a news conference in eastern Germany, adding there were some indications it was carried out by President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

"It is a scandal that no U.N. Security Council resolution materialised and those who opposed it must consider what responsibility they bear," she said. She declined to interpret U.S. President Donald Trump's comments that the attack went "beyond a red line".

The real scandal is that Merkel is still in power and allowed to hold such plain stupid comments.

Indications? Really? Again by the lonely syrian guy from London?

So this time not the Turks and IS like the last time?

Cui bono???

Nothing stopping Merkel doing something independently, if she feels that strongly about it.

Anyone expecting the UN to do anything will be waiting a very long time. I don't think they have done anything since the Korean war.

I think that leaders like Merkel and others  have way more information than they will release to the public.    In  the  future  they may  be able to admit it  but only after Assad is gone  and this war is over.

Geezer

Trump should have hit the castle that Assad resides in rather than create more collateral damage. Cut off the head is the only answer. Also Russia and Iran will sit up and take notice.

Give em a choice Angela do they wish to be gassed and die peacefully or painfully shot.

Seriously? Do you think that if Assad is assassinated the regime will just hand over power to the rebels, especially as they know if they lose they'll all be killed?

I don't agree with a lot of things Merkel says but this time she's 100% spot on with her comment.

There were some indications? Sounds suspiciously like the raison d'etre for claiming Iraq's possession of WMDs.

Unfortunately politicians never seem to learn from the mistakes of the past.
