April 17, 20179 yr EC prepares for elections amid scheduling confusion BANGKOK, 17 April 2017 (NNT) - Somchai Srisutthiyakorn of the Election Commission (EC) said the electoral organ is preparing to hold the next general election, but cannot issue a definitive timetable before considering the impacts of the organic laws and the constitution itself. Some of scheduling confusion stems from the new charter’s phrasing, particularly in Sections 85 and 268. They stipulate the time period for the EC to hold the next general election, as well as the time period for the EC to announce the election results. Regarding organic laws, the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will deliberate the laws on political parties and the EC on April 21st. Somchai highlighted the importance of clarity in regards to the provincial EC offices. According to the draft organic law submitted to the NLA by the Constitution Drafting Commission, provincial EC offices would be replaced by electoral inspectors. While the EC has opposed the idea in favor of retaining its provincial offices, the independent body affirmed its readiness to perform its duties regardless of the NLA’s decision. -- nnt 2017-04-17
