northern irish bank notes thailand

Featured Replies

Please can anybody advise me where I can change Northern Irish banknotes, the embassy were all but useless, desperate folks!

Moved to the ... banking ... forum.

I have zero knowledge about such notes (just learned they exist).

But from the net it sounds like a hopeless attempt to change them here.

Waiting to stand corrected.

After looking at the link your best bet is a visit to Ireland or England.

Where are you now?

Never seen any booths in Pattaya or Bangkok offering NI note rates, very few do Scottish and those that do offer a lower rate.

Best bet would be a specialist money exchange, not a Thai bank.

Alternatively, find someone who is about to go home and see if they have any Bank of England notes they are prepared to swap.

I've Traveled to many countries during my life and I would posit it is very difficult to find any bank or money changer that will accept Scottish or Northern Irish notes, especially the latter.

It's not because they are not acceptable as legal currency. It's because they see so few of them that they are not confident enough to recognize them. Would you recognize a Mongolian Tughrik note for instance? I certainly wouldn't! It's the same logic.

I would also suspect that it is more difficult for receiver to utilize them in further trading.

I have heard complaints about retail outlets in England not accepting them either, basically for the same reason. Maybe you've had that experience yourself.

I'm very much afraid you're in for quite a bit of leg work. Good luck.

Your best bet truly is to post them to someone in the UK and have them change them for you and post back.
