Cambodia and Laos Winning the war on drugs

Featured Replies

Cambodia and Laos have pledged to keep working to strengthen their 540km border and build on this year’s success in the crackdown on drug offenders. The commitment came after a meeting between Interior Minister Sar Kheng and Laos Minister of Public Security Somkeo Silavong.

National Police spokesman Kirth Chantharith said, “The two countries’ police forces are already cooperating well and exchanging information with each other, especially over drug trafficking. Today is a pledge to keep working at it.” He said cooperation between the countries had led to more than 7,000 people being arrested for drug offences in the first three months of the year.

Plans are in place for 145 border posts to be set up. Precise locations have been earmarked for 121 of these, with suitable sites for the other 24 still to be decided in Preah Vihear and Stung Treng provinces. Mr. Chantharith said, “Laos is committed to cooperating with Cambodia to work on cross-border issues in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. Our joint aim is to use the border to help people to travel more and make their lives better.”
