CNRP plays down mass defections

Featured Replies

Senior opposition officials have played down the significance of members defecting to the ruling CPP after 180 CNRP officials in Kampong Cham province jumped ship on Tuesday. Party vice-president Eng Chhay Eang yesterday said defections have been a common part of the political scene since the 1980s, when the CPP’s predecessor – the State of Cambodia –would announce the number of defectors who had joined it.

He said the departure of some local CNRP activists would not affect the popularity of the party or its political activities. It is normal for people to change their allegiances, added Mr. Chhay Eang, since no one is obliged to support any one party.

“Everyone has the right to vote for any party they support. There was less media coverage in the past, but there were still defections then,” he said.   The 180 CNRP officials from Kampong Cham who joined the CPP on Tuesday came after defections in Ratanakkiri, Kandal and Phnom Penh since the start of this year.
