Pattaya police to summon core redshirt leaders for questioning over Asean Summit 2009 breakup

Pattaya police said they will officially summon five core leaders of the  United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) for questioning over their roles relevant to the storming by hundreds of redshirt protesters into the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel where the Asean Summit was being held in April 2009.

Pattaya police superintendent Pol Col Apichai Krobpet identified the five core leaders as Jatuporn Promphan, Nattawut Saikur, Veerakarn Musikapong, Adisorn Piengket, and Weng Tochirakarn.

The planned issuance of summons came after the Appeals Court on March 22 sentenced a core redshirt leader Arisman Pongruangrong and 12 other core members to four years in prison with no suspension of jail sentence after finding them guilty of forced entry to the hotel to disrupt the summit.

Eight years after the fact. You'd think there are more pressing issues at hand to be dealt with.

Finding as many reasons as possible to ban/prevent Red Shirt leaders, and indeed any political figures who may lean towards the pro Thaksin factions in politics is very pressing, especially if, as we are constantly reminded, an election is "soon to occur".

Personally I think it is probably an unnecessary precaution - given that there is at least one "significant sad event" in reserve, along with who knows what security considerations which can be used to justify continued delay to elections. But of course we must recognise that taking actions against the opposition group, even 8 years on, show commendable loyalty which will be rewarded when the spoils are divided - I beg your pardon, I meant when government posts are allocated.

Funny, doesn't seem to be a statute of limitations in play? Now of course if they had killed a policeman then......
