British Dad Applying for passport for half-Thai Son

Hi all,

 

apologies if this appears in the wrong forum, i'm a bit lost with all of this. I hope that somebody may be able to give me some advice......

I am looking to apply for a passport for my 6 month old baby boy, but i'm a bit lost - d'uh! I know how to apply for the passport but is there anything else that i need to do to register him as a Brit? Do i even need to register him as a Brit? His older brother (yes, my other son) is 5 and a half and has both British and Thai passports but i can't for the life of me remember how i did this! Is it just as simple as applying for this passport for my youngest?

 

EDIT - i should have said that I and his mother have been married 6 years - if that makes a difference?!

If anybody has any recent experience or knows this system and would like to share i'd be extremely grateful.

I did this 3 years ago... 

 

I remember needing:

1) Colour photo copies of every page of my Passport. 

2) Colour photo copies of every page of my Wife's Passport (OR Original ID card).

3) Father Full British Birth Certificate

4) Photos of the child, 'True likeness' signed by a 'professional'...  (Childs Dr or Amphur office). 

5) Childs Thai Birth Certificate and Translation certified by Thai MFA (Ministry of foreign affairs). 

 

That info is off the top of my head and may have changed or be incomplete.

Do you remember if you had to apply for British citizenship for your child before applying for the passport or did you just apply??

I have but in all honesty, i'm baffled!

If you were born in the UK your youngest automatically is a British Citizen. If I'm not mistaken there is no application for this. His passport, once received will also be proof of Nationality (Citizenship).

 

If I'm not mistaken, your 'full' Birth Certificate, and your name on your sons Birth Certificate are proof of his British Citizenship.

 

 

NOTE: the Foreign office Website is not always up to date with the information. When I applied for my Son's Passport, I was informed of the new requirement to have a 'Colour' photocopy of all pages of mine and my Wife's passport - This had not been updated on their Website and I only had Black and White copies... this delayed the application.

I can confirm that, just spoken to my son who has done it for his son and you just apply for the passport.

 May I ask if current passport means a passport that has not yet expired? My British passport expired time 10 or 11 years ago as I now use my New Zealand passport most of the time

Just apply for the passport with all certificates and copies mentioned in the guidelines. I recently applied for my 4 month old son and was rejected as I was born outside the UK myself. If you were born in the UK or your wife and you were married at the time of birth then your son is British by descent. Unfortunately in my case I am British by descent even though I lived in the UK for 25years or my 33 and I cannot pass it on to my son without going through the full citizenship application. 

A side note if you decide to take your family back to the UK before they are 18 and they live continuously for 3years plus you can register them as full citizens and then they will be allowed to pass on British citizenship if they have a child outside of the UK in the future and they won't end up in my situation.

I applied and got one for my half Thai son in February this year, we are not married, I didn't need too photocopy every page of my UK Passport, I submitted his Mothers Thai ID.

All documents including her ID have to be in English by a certified translator, the average cost can be up to 500 baht per A4 document, I got mine done in Bangkok via email for less, 9 documents, 2450 baht including postage.

I completed the Application and it was checked and sent to the UK by VFS Global at Trendy in Bangkok.

i got an email a couple of days later from Liverpool, his Mother should have signed the Application, She had too write a letter signed by her stating she was the 'responsible' person and agreed to the Application, we did and the Passport arrived a couple of weeks later, you have to collect it, they won't post it.

BTW photocopy all your translations as they don't send the documents back just in case you need them for Visa Applications etc.

it was strange as a colleague signed his half Thai sons Application and the Passport Office didn't query it, maybe because his son had an English name ?

i can understand why they do it to stop child abduction.

You need to book an appointment at the trendy building 

 Give 3 different days and 3 different times

They must have changed the rules in the last few weeks as they never mailed UK Passports in the past, too many went 'astray'. You had too collect them or give some one a letter of Authorisation to collect it, I collected my sons.

You only need to photocopy every page of your Passport if you are renewing your UK Passport, just the photo page which must be in colour for your child's application.

There is an organisation in Pattaya that advertises on this website  (owner Daryl is English) that will do the application and collection for you.

We used them last year for our daughters passport I found the fee reasonable as it saved two trips to Bangkok as you have to apply in person and pick up in person involving air fares and overnight accommodation ( unless you use an agent)

Your correct. You have to collect your passport, they do not post it or DHL it back to you. We just applied for our sons British passport and my wife was told she would have to return to collect it.

Your case sounds straight forward. I would advise though if his birth certificate is a Thai one, best to get a translation done. If you have already got him a British birth certificate just use that and all should be okay.

UK immigration law changed in about 2011 so it is fairly easy now.

Not a "scam" just gives the child more options. Thai education is very poor for instance. International schools are expensive, I know I paid the bills. When he was old enough I packed him off the boarding school which didn't cost much more. Now he works in the UK and says he will come here on holiday on his British passport as he doesn't want to get drafted into the Thai forces.

Not at all. I might be living and working in Thailand, but I have no desire to be Thai and most definitely want my son to be British, which, at 2 years old, he now is!

Thanks all. I think i have everything sorted now. Have an appointment at Trendy on Thursday morning and, fingers crossed, i have all my ducks in a row!

 

Got all the Thai documents translated, passport photos signed by a friend (teacher) so hopefully have everything done!

When we go to England eventually ( to see family ) does her mother have to write a letter agreeing to let my daughter leave the country ?  ( we are not together anymore but i don't think this will be a problem )
