Media reform bill revisions 'will take a week'

The media reform committee's revisions of the controversial media regulation draft bill will take about a week before the proposal is submitted to the government for further implementation via National Reform Steering Assembly chairman Tinnapan Nakata, assembly whip Kamnoon Siddhisamarn said on Thursday.

Kamnoon said the committee is now following recommendations made by NRSA members at a meeting on Monday after the proposal was endorsed by a vote of 141-13.

The draft bill has proved controversial as media groups and civil organisations strongly oppose any form of state control or interference via new mechanisms proposed in the draft bill, including a media professional council which would include two permanent secretaries.

The bill had earlier proposed also a licensing system for media professionals, but it was later scrapped and replaced with an accreditation and certification system.

Media groups remain dissatisfied, however, and have vowed to push for the media bill itself to be scrapped.
