US Tax Return Information Needed.

I filed a 1040NR-EZ (2013) several months ago and the IRS corrected my mistake, it seems I didn’t claim any deductions or a personal allowance.

As a non-resident ex Green Card holder who recieves SSc every month I had no deductions and I didn’t think I was allowed to claim a personal allowance. That correction left me with a refund much larger than I expected, subsequently received and banked. The trouble is, I don’t know what numbers the IRS used to adjust my taxable income.

I’m now getting ready to file tax returns for 2014, 2015 and 2016 and need to try to understand personal allowances for non-resident aliens.

The difference in the adjusted income figure the IRS used and my gross income figure is USD 6,350, suspiciously close to the 2013 US resident single person allowance of USD 6,300. But if I read the rules correctly, as a non-resident Green Card holder I am limited to a personal allowance of USD 3,900.

Any clues on this anyone?

Many thanks, that might just work.

FWIW my most recent written query to the IRS took seven months to get a reply.

Anyone else with accurate feedback?

I found the answer to my question and applied the irs logic to my subsequent years returns. It's may be of interest to some that the irs no longer allows non-resident expats to take the standard deduction hence the rate of tax they pay has increased, effective with the 2016 tax return. The writing is on the wall for UK expats, expect the UK Revenue also to remove the non-resident expat personal allowance in the not too distant future.
