You don't need interpreters to botch important basic points in messages in any media. The one I cherish most as a high point in sub-editing folklore came from a leading London newspaper (front page headline) during WW:2:  "Allies push bottles up German troops".  The infamous incident was never investigated by the International crimes court after someone realised the major crime involved had been omission of an apostrophe of possession at the end of the first word in the heading , rather than mutilation of  surrendering enemy troops.

Actually, I think the civilian response WAS one of Britain's finest hours.
