BANGKOK: -- The family of student activist Jatupat Boonpattararalsat are scheduled to travel to South Korea on Monday to represent him at the Gwangju Human Rights Award, as the activist remains in prison after his repeated bail requests were rejected.

Viboon, Prim and Promporn Boonbatararaksa, the father, mother and sister of the activist better known as “Pai Dao Din”, will attend the ceremony on Thursday to receive the award, which comes with a US$50,000 (Bt1.7 million) prize.

Pai, arrested for alleged violations of the Computer Crime Act and the lese majeste law, was recognised by the committee of the May 18 Memorial Foundation for his courage in fighting human rights violations in Thailand.

Viboon wrote on his Facebook page on Monday that Pai “is deprived of his right to bail and other human rights including the chance to represent the Thai people in receiving such as honorable award because the Thai government took a different stance”.

Pai is the youngest person and the second Thai to receive the award.

The first Thai was Angkhana Neelapaijit, a National Human Rights Commission member well known for campaigning against forced disappearances.
