BANGKOK, 19 May 2017 (NNT) – The Deputy Prime Minister for Legal Affairs has convened a meeting to conclude the number of contract nurses to be listed as civil servants while insisting that the government is willing to help all of them as much as possible.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam had a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Public Health, the Office of the Civil Service Commission and other relevant agencies in order to discuss the process of accepting additional contract nurses into civil service. The number of nurses to be listed as civil servants under the Public Health Ministry this year was rounded up prior to submission to the Cabinet next Tuesday for consideration.

In response to the network of contract nurses’ demand for all members to be registered at once, Mr Wissanu reiterated that such a move would not be possible. He asked the troubled nurses to put their trust in the government, saying the three-year framework recently set for their listing does not only aim to please them but is a serious one that would have a binding effect on the current and the next administrations.

Echoing an earlier statement by the Permanent Secretary for Public Health, Minister of Public Health Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn explained that a total of 8,792 contract nurses will be eligible for registration as civil servants over the three-year period, with roughly 2,930 of them to be listed each year. He then asked the nurses be confident in the government’s determination to help them, saying there have never been more contract nurses entering civil service than this time.
